SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS
I attended my last official School Council meeting on Monday June 2 nd. It is with a mixture of feelings that I say goodbye to
such a large part of my life for the past decade. It has been such an honor and pleasure to serve as your Chair for both the
School Council and the Parent Advisory Association over the past 10 years. I am so proud of all the things we were able to
accomplish over this period of time. I have had many, many faces sitting at the table over the years in both the executive positions as well as concerned parents who took time out of their busy schedules to attend meetings and have a say in their
child’s School and education. It really does make a difference so please for those of you who haven’t attended a meeting yet
please do so in the coming school year, and for those of you who make it to as many meetings as possible please continue your
dedication to our council and to our school. I have way too many people to thank so I will just send this blanket THANK
YOU out to you all. I could not have succeeded in my position as well as I did without the help and support of all the parents
who volunteered in one way or another to our council and our school. I thank my present and past executive for always putting the interests of our school and our children above and beyond their own. You are all invaluable and I thank you from
the bottom of my heart and I will miss you dearly. I also send a huge thank you out to the many parents who volunteered
when help was needed for fundraising, working a casino the teacher’s supper and much more. Without the army of wonderful parents we have at this school allot of things would have went undone. I also thank the staff and administration here at
NSCHS. Your patience and support have been instrumental in making sure that our council would succeed and be successful, it has been my pleasure to work with all of you. A person that I will name is my daughter Jewell; thank you for your
commitment and support in the position of student reporter at each meeting for the past two years. It has been wonderful
having you sit at the table with me each month. It was wonderful having both my daughter’s fill this position; first my
daughter Krystal and then my daughter Jewell. Thank you also to past student reporters and to the teacher liaison’s who
have attended the meetings over the years. Lastly I would like to thank Mrs. Johnette Lemke our School Trustee for her
continued support to NSCHS by attending almost every meeting during my time as Council Chair and Mr. Brian Scott our
School Principal who has made this school into one of the best in The Blackgold School District. It has been such a pleasure
to work with you over these many years. The end of the year is almost upon us so I would like to wish each of you a wonderful summer with your family. Fit in as much sun, laughter, fun and love as you can while the weather holds out. This is Alberta after all!
The Parent Advisory Association applied for a matching Community Initiatives Grant back in November and I am pleased
to say that we received the full amount that we applied for. Last month we received a cheque for $6,543.00. Items that we
were able to purchase for the school were; new sports equipment (ask your children about all the fun items that are in the
gym now), camera’s, griddles, storage boxes for sheet music for the band department, learning manipulative games for the
split class, 6 more sets of noise cancelling out headphones, a set of 21 commercial grade 8 ft long tables with cart, a laminator
and ski sets for the outdoor education program. Something that was purchased by council and was not a part of the grant
was a new wood lathe for the Industrial Arts Department. In my opinion it has been a very successful year here at NSCHS.
Vesey’s Bulbs was a success with over $1300.00 in profit. We have a few extra items that can be purchased still which are: 4
Packages of 4 Oriental Lily’s mixed and 1 package (5 packages) of sunflower seeds. These items
are $10.00 each! The bulbs need to be sold soon as they are sprouting.
We still have some cookie dough left as well; 2 Boxes of Pucks of the Oatmeal Coconut Chocolate
Chunk.
2 Boxes of Pucks of Sugar Cookie
1 Tub of Sugar Cookie
1 Box of Pucks of Dark Chocolate/White Chocolate Chunk
ALL COOKIE DOUGH IS BEING SOLD AT $10.00 PER TUB OR BOX
Please contact either myself at 780-720-6197 or the school if you are interested in any of these items!
Our Regal fundraiser is once again up and running. I apologize for not staying on top of this fundraiser; the website is ready
to take your orders now. Please continue to pass this information to all your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. It is
a painless fundraiser which brings in 35% profit from all sales to our school. The website again is www.nschs.shopregal.ca .
Happy shopping and thanks for your continued support.

Student’s Corner by Kagen Newman
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it
was the age of wisdom, it was the age of
foolishness..."
It is with these words that Charles Dickens begins
his famous story "A Tale of Two Cities" and it is with
these words that I boldly describe high school. 6
years spent of laughter, 6 years of tears, 6 years of
intelligence, 6 years of ignorance. Each of these
moments has shaped high school into an unforgettable experience which has proven to be infinitely
more exciting than Dickens' classic novel written
nearly two centuries ago. Each seemingly minor
achievement has made my heart glow with
unparalleled pride. Though many people look back
on high school as a time when there was no silver
lining, only downcast, misunderstood, teenage
moments that are inevitable in any individual's life,
my memories have seemingly been gilded. I hold
onto each of these moments in the hopes that I'll be
able to live in them forever.
Regardless of whether nostalgia or cowardice is responsible, I know that it is futile.
Life continues on after high school to the pleasure and chagrin of everyone. The
beginning of Dickens' book is both as cheerful and as melancholy as the ending of
high school appears to be. It leaves the reader, like many of this year's graduates,
feeling undecided. All we really are able to do is to hope for a happy ending. And that
is what each of us is searching for. So I'd like to wish all my fellow graduates good
luck; whether you're chasing your dreams or running away, I hope you are able to
stumble upon a happy ending.
