NON-PROFIT BOARD (NPB) STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
SELECTION
Those being considered for an NPB Internship position will be
asked to undergo a short interview (no more than 30 minutes),
the primary purpose of which is to further assess each
applicant’s suitability for the internship.
Interviews take place: APRIL 21-25, 2014
MATCHING
Successful applicants will be matched with non-profit boards
according to their preferences and skills and the top
preferences and needs of the board.
Board matching is completed by the end of summer 2014.
EVALUATION
The NPB Internship is evaluated on a Pass/Fail Basis.
To receive a Non-Profit Board Student Internship Certificate,
participants must:
§ Attend and participate in the six workshops organized by
CAPS;
§ Participate and contribute to board/committee meetings (as
agreed upon with your Mentor);
§ Complete a mid-point reflective self-evaluation (form to be
supplied by program);
§ Complete a project for the Board and present it at a yearend graduation celebration in April.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Students accepted in the NPB student Internship program
participate in two activities that occur simultaneously:
I. WORKSHOPS
§ A series of six workshops, organized by CAPS: Your U of A
Career Centre, that provide training and discussion of key
aspects of non-profit boards (eg. finance and budgeting;
policy development; group decision-making; legal roles and
responsibilities; effective participation; ethical guidelines;
conflict resolution…)
§ Timeline = Approximately 15 – 20 hours over eight months.
§ WORKSHOP SCHEDULE 2014-2015:
§ Saturday, SEPTEMBER 6, 2014, 9AM-1PM
§ Wednesday, OCTOBER 22, 2014, 8-10AM
§ Wednesday, NOVEMBER 19, 2014, 8-10AM
§ Wednesday, JANUARY 21, 2015, 8-10AM
§ Wednesday, FEBRUARY 25, 2015, 8-10AM
§ Wednesday, MARCH 18, 2015, 8-10AM
§ Monday, APRIL 13, 2015 (Graduation Showcase)
II. NPB PLACEMENT
§ On a non-profit board (attend board meetings and work on
various tasks and projects as determined by the host board, in
conjunction with the intern and the CSL program office)
§ Under the guidance of a mentor selected from amongst the
members of the board with which individual student is placed
§ Timeline = Approximately 30-35 hours over eight months

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Interested applicants must meet the following eligibility
requirements:
§ Successful completion of 2 years of post-secondary education
by the internship start date
§ Registered full-time student at the U of A for the duration of
the internship
§ Satisfactory academic standing
§ Experience in the non-profit community

Internship Program is to provide students at the University
of Alberta the opportunity to learn the variety of practices
and skills involved in serving on the boards of communitybased non-profit organizations.
This internship meets the non-credit opportunity
requirement for the Certificate in Community Engagement
and Service-Learning.
