With our Mission Statement guiding us, Phelps Mill Country has sponsored several art education programs in the Otter Tail County Public Schools. In 2000, as a direct result of the Festival successful years, we gave over$10,000 to the area schools to promote art education. This was done, working with the school’s art department and COMPASS, a non-profit art education organization, dedicated to connecting artists with you to further art education. The school’s art teacher picked the artist according to their needs and when a question came up about the supplies needed, we sent additional monies to cover the supply costs. In February of 2006, Phelps Mill Country sponsored Gary Harbo in 10 area public schools. He has been a Festival exhibitor for the past 20 years. His art lesson of an animal character teaches students that drawing can be fun and easy. Harbo’s stay in our area was well received and a rewarding experience for the students, teachers and parents. Over the years Phelps Mill Country has donated money to various projects in Otter Tail County and to the park improvement plans: the remodeling of the picnic shelters, contributing $5,000 to improve the structure of the Mill, additional trees when needed, and the donation of the new picnic tables with the cooperation of Boy Scout Troop 305 for an Eagle Scout project. In 2013, an additional $2,000 was donated to the Phelps Mill Park fund In March, 2011, the Landmark Center of Henning, along with financial support from Phelps Mill, sponsored Artist in Residence Aldo Moroni. During his month at the Landmark, he worked with nearly 700 students from four area schools, including Henning, Underwood, New York Mills, and Battle Lake making clay sculptures. These clay towers soon made up a little city on the front lawn on the Landmark Center. This city of towers remained on display until mid-July of 2011. We have sponsored the Phelps Mill Festival, now in its 30th year to provide funding to accomplish our mission goals. Because of the existence and the support of the Festival, many of our area non-profit groups can raise the funding needed for their community and projects. Thank you to all who volunteer and participate to make this Festival successful and fun for the whole family.
