Dear Friends,
On May 15th the Glendale Police Foundation along with the Glendale Kiwanis and Glendale Bar Association, presented our Annual Police Awards Luncheon. If you were fortunate enough to attend, you heard of the many exploits of our Glendale Police Department. The stories told of police intervention to prevent crime, protect citizens and property were engrossing. Over 430 Citizens and Police attended and during the exciting
presentations, no one left. Chief Robert Castro was able to see first hand the support
given to the Glendale Police Department by the citizens of Glendale and the Glendale
Police Foundation. On the 11th of October, our “K-9’s in the Park” event will be held at
Verdugo Park in conjunction with the Kiwanis “Duck Race”. This is a fun event for the
entire family, especially if you are a dog owner. We invite you to become a sponsor and
to participate. I hope you enjoyed a safe and enjoyable summer.

The Chief’s Corner . . . Robert M. Castro
This past May, I had the honor to help recognize the men and
women of our department at our annual Police Awards Luncheon. We celebrated the incredible work performed by the
members of our department each day and the exceptional
public safety services they provide to the Glendale community. We also took time to remember and honor those officers
who have given their lives in the performance of their duties. I
could not have been more proud to have the privilege and
honor to address the guests as the Chief of Police. The ceremony was a fitting tribute to all the awardees as well as an opportunity to remind
community leaders how fortunate they are to have such professional and dedicated
members who make up the Glendale Police Department.

Mini-Grants
Shooting Range Mower
The Glendale Police shooting range
was beginning to hamper the safety of
our officers during the necessary
shooting practice and qualifying. The
old mower was in constant need of
repair and allowing the grass to get
too tall. So our Range Master requested a Mini-grant from the Foundation for a new ride-along mower that
would do the job twice as well in half
the time.

Police Unity Tour 2014
The Glendale Police Department is honored to be a member
of the New York Memorial Chapter of the Police Unity
Tour. This is a 300 mile bicycle ride which begins at the
World Trade Center and concludes four days later at the
National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial in Washington,
DC. Our Chapter raises funds for the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial including most of the $1750 each rider is required to raise each year. Extra
donations are used to support our member agencies when they lose an officer, the Soldier Ride,
Wounded Warrior Project, and Project 22 to prevent Veteran suicides, to name a few. We are honored
to be among the 1700 law enforcement officers who complete this pilgrimage each May and have been
blessed to have had three members of our own Lazzaretto family participate in this amazing event. The
Police Unity Tour is the largest fundraiser for our Memorial and is a 501c3 non-profit organization. For

the event of a resuscitation emergency.
SWAT Team Hotel Assistance September 2014
Best in the West 2014 Invitational
S.W.A.T. Competition in San Jose,
California on September 18-19, 2014.
The courses test physical fitness, tactics and proficiency with weapons and
teamwork. In addition to building camaraderie between the various SWAT
teams, the competition allows the law
enforcement agencies to share techniques and improve their skills.

Officer’s Association
On May 12, 2014 the Glendale Police
Officers Association hosted our 23rd
Annual “Cops-for-Kids” Charity Golf
Tournament at the La Canada
Flintridge Country Club. Officer Bryan
Duncan writes that with the generous
contributions and help from many
supporters, sponsors, and participants
in the Golf Tournament, GPOA was
able to raise over $20,000 to target the
needs of the underprivileged, disabled,
hospitalized and at-risk youngsters, as
well as those who are victims of
accidents and/or crimes. Each year,
activities are planned to benefit these
children.
Due to our tournament’s success, we
are now able to sponsor scholarships
and support local youth sports teams.
In addition, this program responds to
the emergency needs of and requests
for children, whether it be material or
financial.
For the past several years, we have
adopted numerous disadvantaged
families during the holidays, providing
decorations, gifts, clothing and holiday
meals. Our Holiday support to these
families reinforces our commitment to
the community and our children.

We must all be in this

The City of Glendale continues to have an
unacceptable number of fatal traffic collisions. Most of these deaths have been
among our older pedestrian population.
Speeding, distracted driving, and jaywalking
are at the root cause and endanger drivers
and pedestrians. The City of Glendale and its
departments are working closely together on
traffic safety and it will remain a high priority
for the Police Department. Enforcement
alone, however, will not curb reckless driving
and jaywalking pedestrians. “In order to make
significant and lasting reductions in preventable pedestrian and vehicle traffic collisions, we
need the help and support of the entire community to make behavioral driving and walking
changes. Traffic safety is a community responsibility and by working together reductions and successful traffic safety outcomes
are possible,” said Police Chief Robert M.
Castro.
