MUGALULA COMMUNITY SCHOOL Contact information: P.O.Box 36612, Kampala Tel. +256777048077 E-‐mail: [email protected] MUGALULA COMMUNITY SCHOOL Mugalula Community School was founded in 1999 by Ms. Lillian Nagadya, who has been a teacher for over ten years now and has an interest in supporting children with a special need of care. After seeing first hand the challenges these children face on a day-‐to-‐day basis, Lillian was inspired to make a difference by giving them a chance to make their dreams and aspirations become reality. Since orphans are among the hardest hit and often left to fend for themselves, due to high HIV/AIDS influx among parents, Lillian decided to adopt ten orphans at her home and to open a schooling centre to educate such needy children. Currently the school educates about hundred pupils, from baby class to primary five level, without charging school fees, and runs a soap production project, so that poor parents and guardians can sell the soap in exchange for the costs of schooling materials, clothing and feeding. Lillian’s school provides a good opportunity to children and parents that cannot afford to travel ten kilometres from the village to the nearest public school. However Lillian faces many constraints, first and foremost, because the school is operating on rented premises that become increasingly expensive, even though they lack the most basic standards required by government regulation, such as buildings with plastered walls, windows and cemented floors, and can be held responsible for some health problems experienced by children. Furthermore one of the buildings has been declared structurally unsafe, and some classrooms even have no roof. The school also lacks furniture, especially desks, and protective fencing. Lillian asked CML and MFV to support her with a window of opportunity to reach donors that will kindly help her to address the most pressing needs of the school and children. Accordingly, Lillian is currently trying to gather the funds that will allow her to fix up the school buildings and create a safer and better learning environment for the children. She also would be grateful for any volunteer teachers that could come to help out with some classes. The detailed budget estimate (see figure below) shows that the total material cost for the renovations will amount to 14.750.000 UGX, in addition to the labour cost of 1.000.000 UGX, which makes a total of 15,750,000 UGX or approximately US$ 6300.
