Scan to Folder – SMB – Legacy Kyocera Devices to OSX Mavericks Scan to Folder from Kyocera Devices using SMB Kyocera MFP and MFD devices offer SMB and FTP protocols when scanning to folder. Choosing the SMB protocol on the Kyocera device and ensuring it will successfully deliver a file to a shared folder on another device is dependent on a number of factors, such as correctly identifying the hostname/ip address of the host, shared folder and permissions to write to the shared folder. Another obstacle to be overcome is that the sending and receiving devices must have the same implementation of SMB protocol, or be backward compatible. Kyocera devices use Microsoft’s implementation of SMB protocol. However, there are many versions of this released over the years. Windows OS and SMB Here is a list of the current and previous implementations of Microsoft’s SMB protocol .. However, Apple discontinued SAMBA support in OSX 10.7 (Lion), as the SAMBA team changed the licensing for the software to the GPL v3 license which added a number of restrictions to the software. Because of these restrictions, in OSX Lion, Apple developed and offered their own version of SAMBA; SMBX. Recently, in OS X 10.9 Mavericks, in another about turn, Apple dropped SMBX and changed direction with their file sharing implementation to offer their version of Microsoft’s SMB2 protocol. Macs running OSX Mavericks now use SMB2 when talking to other Macs or to PCs running Windows Vista, 7 or 8. This change signals the end of support for NT domains in OS X. What does this mean for Scan to Folder using SMB between Kyocera Legacy Devices and Mac OSX Mavericks ? Kyocera Legacy devices were compatible with Mac OSX file sharing when the SAMBA protocol was used. To restore this functionality, the use of a third-part application (SMBUp) is necessary. SMBUp reinstates SAMBA in OSX. See next page for a link to the application and instructions for installation, setup and use. 2|Page Scan to Folder – SMB – Legacy Kyocera Devices to OSX Mavericks SMBUp Download the free software at : http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/41541/smbup Instructions for use… Once installed turn off File Sharing from System Preferences Set the Name and Add the folder, click on “Allow Guest” and untick “Read Only” 3|Page Scan to Folder – SMB – Legacy Kyocera Devices to OSX Mavericks Click on “Advanced Share Disk Settings” and make sure the Group and Full control are ticked.
