Reinstatement or renewal of Software Subscription and Support ■ If you want to force ILMT to accept such part numbers you must either manually change their type to Licenses or remove this column completely ■ ILMT ignores part numbers of type – Media and documentation 9 ICT: [email protected] ILMT Wiki: www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/IBM+License+Metric+Tool Created by ILMT Central Team © 2014 IBM Corporation Optimizing Bundling Process IBM License Metric Tool 7.5 – Questions & Answers Version 1.0.2 Part numbers – Integration with ILMT – cont. ■ Additionally, users can browse part numbers by using two database views: CUSTOM.PART_NUMBER_V CUSTOM.CURRENT_PART_NUMBERS_V 10 ICT: [email protected] ILMT Wiki: www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/IBM+License+Metric+Tool Created by ILMT Central Team © 2014 IBM Corporation Optimizing Bundling Process IBM License Metric Tool 7.5 – Questions & Answers Version 1.0.2 Part numbers – Best practices ■ Keep the process of importing part numbers under control Create an up-to-date list of part numbers by using PA Start from ultimately purchased and renewed part numbers, e.g. during last year Filter just PVU part numbers using the Part description column Divide them into small groups according to their importance Create text files with those groups of part numbers or even individual part numbers and import them to ILMT Find new products on the MSI panel, confirm appropriate assignments to those products and bundle missing components to those products Iteratively follow above instruction till every PVU product is discovered and appropriately bundled 11 ICT: [email protected] ILMT Wiki: www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/IBM+License+Metric+Tool Created by ILMT Central Team © 2014 IBM Corporation Optimizing Bundling Process IBM License Metric Tool 7.5 – Questions & Answers Version 1.0.2 ILMT software views – Introduction ■ Three views are available in ILMT to see software inventory All Products PVU Products Systems Products ■ Views were design to show products based on the same license ■ You can easily switch between views by chosing the desired one and clicking the Update button ■ You can choose the time interval that the particular view will cover Not earlier than the end date of the last signed report Not later than the current day 12 ICT: [email protected] ILMT Wiki: www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/IBM+License+Metric+Tool Created by ILMT Central Team © 2014 IBM Corporation Optimizing Bundling Process IBM License Metric Tool 7.5 – Questions & Answers Version 1.0.2 ILMT software views – Systems Products ■ Under the IBM systems software licensing structure, software is licensed based on the number of processor cores and server tier. A software product is priced based on the type of the system server (tier) and the number of processor cores it is running on. ■ The tier table is based on the size of the server system model and allows pricing based on server capacity. The tier table is organized into small, medium, and large tiers where each tier includes multiple types of servers. 13 ICT: [email protected] ILMT Wiki: www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/IBM+License+Metric+Tool Created by ILMT Central Team © 2014 IBM Corporation Optimizing Bundling Process IBM License Metric Tool 7.5 – Questions & Answers Version 1.0.2 ILMT software views – All Products vs PVU Products and RVU Products ■ PVU products are presented on the view with the same name – PVU Products. It shows how much licensed capacity is required, based on the latest aggregated data gathered by agents. ■ RVU products do not have their own view. You have to manually find the RVU products on the All Products view. ■ All Products view contains all products that are currently in the software inventory regardless of their license. 14 ICT: [email protected] ILMT Wiki: www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/IBM+License+Metric+Tool Created by ILMT Central Team © 2014 IBM Corporation Optimizing Bundling Process IBM License Metric Tool 7.5 – Questions & Answers Version 1.0.2 ILMT software views – All Products vs PVU Products and RVU Products – cont. ■ Type of license is kept on product level ■ Component itself is not aware of its license ■ Component inherits license type from the product it is assigned to ■ Unconfirmed component can travel from one view to other based on product license it is currently assigned to ■ The only view where discovered components will be presented for sure is All Products 15 ICT: [email protected] ILMT Wiki: www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/IBM+License+Metric+Tool Created by ILMT Central Team © 2014 IBM Corporation Optimizing Bundling Process IBM License Metric Tool 7.5 – Questions & Answers Version 1.0.2 ILMT software views – Best practices ■ Work with All Products view to avoid forgetting to assign any of the components ■ Use filtering functionality to avoid refreshing the whole table after each action ■ Export CSV file from the All Products view to have a full picture of your inventory ■ Concentrate on the necessary entries ■ Confirm correctly assigned components and rebundle other components ■ Take advantage of the Reassign instances to this product... functionality ■ Periodically check the effect of your work on the PVU Products view 16 ICT: [email protected] ILMT Wiki: www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/IBM+License+Metric+Tool Created by ILMT Central Team © 2014 IBM Corporation Optimizing Bundling Process IBM License Metric Tool 7.5 – Questions & Answers Version 1.0.2 CSV snapshot of MSI panel – Column explanation – PVU products ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 17 Product Current Server ID CPU Core Full Capacity CPU Core Subcapacity PVU Full Capacity PVU Subcapacity Release Component Host Name Confidence Explanation of Confidence Exclusion Status Operating System Scan Group Processor Type Server ID For Peak Capacity Server CPU Core Subcapacity Limit Server CPU Core Subcapacity ICT: [email protected] ■ ■ ■ ■ Server PVU Subcapacity Limit Server PVU Subcapacity PVU per Core Part Numbers ■ ■ ■ ■ Free of charge Subcapacity eligible Installed on shared filesystem Agent deleted ILMT Wiki: www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/IBM+License+Metric+Tool Created by ILMT Central Team © 2014 IBM Corporation Optimizing Bundling Process IBM License Metric Tool 7.5 – Questions & Answers Version 1.0.2 CSV snapshot of MSI panel – Column explanation – All products ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 18 Product Current Server ID Release Component Host Name ICT: [email protected] ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Confidence Explanation of Confidence Exclusion Status Operating System Scan Group ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Part Numbers Free of charge Subcapacity eligible Installed on shared filesystem Agent deleted ILMT Wiki: www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/IBM+License+Metric+Tool Created by ILMT Central Team © 2014 IBM Corporation Optimizing Bundling Process IBM License Metric Tool 7.5 – Questions & Answers Version 1.0.2 CSV snapshot of MSI panel – Step by step usage ■ Export the All Products view of the MSI panel to a CSV file ■ Open it as a spreadsheet and take advantage of this form ■ Use the auto filtering option to discover possible erroneous entries and fix them Check empty entries (N/A’s) related to imported part numbers => reimport part numbers without unnecessary ones Check blank entries of Part Numbers column => import missing ones Check Free of charge components => analyze whether they should be assigned to different products as chargeable Check not Subcapacity eligible components => analyze if such situation is correct Check the entries where Agent deleted equals Yes => make sure agent was not removed unintentionally Double check the entries where Exclusion Status equals Excluded => make sure the exclusions are valid ■ Use the auto filtering option to drive your bundling process Filter by Current Server ID to bundle components from particular server Filter by Host Name to bundle components from particular OS Sort (descending) all entries using PVU Subcapacity to prioritize bundling actions ■ Make changes in the file and on the Manage Software Inventory panel simultaneously Treat Confidence column bivalent: 100 - Granularity is at the component level but PVU calculation is done only for products and servers, therefore differences between hosts and/or components do not change PVU value ■ CSV file may contain duplication of the PVU values on the server as well as the product level Same product: IBM DB2 Advanced Enterprise Server Edition PVU Option Same servers: IBM 8202 068262P, IBM 8202 0691E2P Different hosts and components => PVU values duplicated on the product and server level ■ To better understand the numbers and the logic behind them, we recommend to start with PDF files where values are not duplicated 23 ICT: [email protected] ILMT Wiki: www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/IBM+License+Metric+Tool Created by ILMT Central Team © 2014 IBM Corporation Optimizing Bundling Process IBM License Metric Tool 7.5 – Questions & Answers Version 1.0.2 Common misinterpretation of PVU calculation – cont ■ Addition PVU values at the host level does not sum up to product PVU. ■ Again, although the granularity of rows in the CSV file suggests host level calculation of PVU, it is not true. Shown PVU is never calculated on the host level. Therefore, PVU does not sum up as someone may expected. To do this, we should take just one entry per server. ■ Starting with PDF files where values are related to the right level will help 24 ICT: [email protected] ILMT Wiki: www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/IBM+License+Metric+Tool Created by ILMT Central Team © 2014 IBM Corporation Optimizing Bundling Process IBM License Metric Tool 7.5 – Questions & Answers Version 1.0.2 Common misinterpretation of PVU calculation – cont ■ PVU calculated in the Server PVU Subcapacity column may be different for two rows for the same host ■ As a result of the fact that PVU is calculated per server and per product, a situation like that may happen: Server IBM 8202 101839R has 3 virtualizations nc011427, nc016725 and nc011421. Each has assigned 1 CPU = 100 PVU. On 3 of them DB2 is installed. On 2 of them WAS is installed. ■ Let’s have a look just on nc011427 virtualization. In the Server PVU Subcapacity column, in one case there is 300 PVU, in another 200 PVU. And it is correct as this value is not related to that host, but to the whole physial server. 25 ICT: [email protected] ILMT Wiki: www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/IBM+License+Metric+Tool Created by ILMT Central Team © 2014 IBM Corporation Optimizing Bundling Process IBM License Metric Tool 7.5 – Questions & Answers Version 1.0.2 Common misinterpretation of PVU calculation – cont ■ There is not enough of PVU on the report. In such a situation it is worth checking if some components of our underpriced product are not assigned to a non-PVU product and we will see them only on the All Products view instead of the PVU Products view ■ The PVU value of some product is too high or there are some unrecognized products on the audit report It is worth to check if there are some incorrectly bundled components Some components may convert a free product into PVU chargeable product Some components that are free in a particular bundle are PVU chargeable when assigned to their own products (products with the same name) – in many cases, such a situation seems natural but in fact it is incorrect 26 ICT: [email protected] ILMT Wiki: www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/IBM+License+Metric+Tool Created by ILMT Central Team © 2014 IBM Corporation Optimizing Bundling Process IBM License Metric Tool 7.5 – Questions & Answers Version 1.0.2 General recommendation ■ Use part numbers to help you with bundling ■ Work with the All Products view to identify all components that should be assigned ■ Take advantage of the CSV snapshot of your software inventory to speed up the decision process ■ Carefully analyze PVU calculation to avoid any misinterpretations 27 ICT: [email protected] ILMT Wiki: www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/IBM+License+Metric+Tool Created by ILMT Central Team © 2014 IBM Corporation ILMT Central Team Thank you Optimizing Bundling Process IBM License Metric Tool 7.5 Questions & Answers © 2013 IBM Corporation
