Pryor St., Gastonia. The “GREAT” acronym stands for Gang Resilient, Excellent And Terrific kids. “We choose rising fifth graders because the time before children go to middle school is critical as they will start becoming more exposed to negative influences,” said West District Patrol Sgt. Kevin McSwain, a camp organizer. “The camp is educational, promotes self-esteem and teamwork, and helps police build a positive relationship and trust with the kids.” Kids’ Camp participants are students from the West and Central Patrol Districts who have preregistered to spend an afternoon of fun with local police officers. Camp attendees will hear important messages related to drug, gang, and bully prevention, as well as observe presentations from a CSI detective and a K-9 Unit. The kids will participate in fun recreational activities led by officers, enjoy a pizza party with ice cream, and attend a Gastonia Grizzlies baseball game accompanied by the officers. Each student will receive a camp T-shirt, a backpack filled with school supplies, and a certificate.
