Restrictions in food fortification:
The discussion related to food fortification remains an important issue in Mexico.
The regulatory authorities have not yet published the Norm concerning this issue; it is under review.
The authorities to be designated in this new period of government will be invited to the event Health Claims.
Restriction on GM plant crops in which Mexico is a center of origin (particularly corn).
The proposed new regulation virtually prevents planting of GM corn in Mexico.
The Norm is already approved and is still under discussion by stakeholders.
Obesity Epidemic and overweight population.
According to the new Health and Nutrition Survey 2012 (ENSANUT 2012;
http://ensanut.insp.mx/mensaje_ssalud.php), the growth rate of the combined prevalence of overweight and
obesity epidemic has reached an inflection point and decreases.
However, the problem is still very important, according to the ENSANUT 2012; we have 34% children with
obesity/overweight, 35% adolescents with this health problem, and 70% in adulthood.
New taxes for high energy foods and for soft drinks and other beverages. Controversy about its application.
RISK ASSESSMENT AND TOXICOLOGY

professionals capable of assessing risk in different areas
regarding nutrition, biotechnology and toxicology,
as well as agroindustry.
