This course will provide practitioners with the tools to effectively assess, manage, and treat individuals with diabetes including those with concurrent obesity. Topics covered include: diabetes classifications, disease complications and limitations, risk factors for type 2, obesity, patient screening and management, oral health manifestations, emergency protocols, periodontal therapy, self-care recommendations. ! ! Take Periodontal Care from Good to Great This course will provide practitioners with an enhanced understanding of the critical elements that need to be considered when treating patients with periodontal disease. Topics to be covered include: risk assessment, diagnostics, oral systemic factors, medical history, professional care, and self-care. ! Carol Jahn, RDH, BS is a dental hygienist, speaker, and author. She received her dental hygiene degree from the University of Iowa and spent the next 14 years working in a several different dental practices dividing her time between a general and periodontal practice. In 1995, she started graduate school pursuing a degree in Continuing Education and Training Management. A year later, she transitioned to a corporate position with Water Pik, Inc, and has been with them ever since. Her primary responsibilities at Water Pik are professional education and relations. She presents from 20-30 continuing education courses every year on topics such as periodontics, diabetes and obesity, child and adolescents, seniors and boomers, and coaching and leadership. Volunteering has been a big part of her life. She has been active in organized dental hygiene since graduation. She has held the many positions in her hygiene career such as President of the West Suburban Dental Hygienists’ Society, President of the Illinois Dental Hygienists’ Association, and Treasurer of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. She currently is the treasurer of her local component, a member of the ADHA Leadership Development Committee, and a delegate for the ADHA to International Federation of Dental Hygienists.
