PACIFIC RIM
CURLING LEAGUE
Season Guide
Welcome
Message from the PRCL Board
Welcome to the Pacific Rim Curling League’s 32nd
season! We’re delighted to bring you an exciting
season of curling and social events.
This guide outlines key events for the 2014-15
season, and celebrates the highlights from our
past year. Keep it handy, and let us know how we
can improve it in the future.
And remember: our game is a social sport first
and foremost – so keep curling’s “broomstacking”
tradition alive and join your opponents for a
drink after your match! (If you don’t know what
broomstacking is, read on for more info…)
Good curling everyone!

Playing The Game
because this is how we do it.
†† Games are 2 hours. When 25 minutes
of play remain and you hear the cowbell
ring, finish the end and play one
more end.
†† After each end, the third on the scoring
team marks the points for the end on
the scoreboard.
†† After each game, the third on each team
records the game result on the league
score sheet posted next to the men’s
locker room.
†† Stones that are touched (aka: burned)
between the hog lines are automatically
removed from play. Stones that are
touched after the far hog line are allowed
to come to rest and the non-offending
skip may:
üü Leave everything as is;
üü Remove the touched stone and
return all displaced stones to their
original positions; or
üü Place all the stones where they
would have come to rest had the
delivered stone not been touched.
†† Spares should have a skill level
appropriate to your division’s level
of play.
†† Spares may only deliver lead or
second stones.
†† If you cannot find a spare and your team
must default, it is the skip’s responsibility
to contact the skip of the opposing team.
3
Curling Etiquette
if you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime.
Curling is a social game. The number one rule is to have fun.
†† Shake hands before and after each game.
†† When the opponent is delivering a stone, stand to the side of the
sheet between the hog lines.
†† Call your own fouls (i.e. burned stones).
†† Be gracious in both victory and defeat.
†† Feel free to share a drink with your opponents post-game.
Don’t delay the game. Teams can complete all 8 ends of play if:
†† All players are on the ice and ready to play at the start time;
†† The next curler to deliver gets in the hack, ready for their shot as
soon as the opponent’s stone has cleared the near hog line;
†† Skips contemplate their next call while the opponent’s stone is in
motion; and
†† After an end is completed, the first Lead player prepares to deliver
the first stone while the other players clear the stones from
the house.
BROOMSTACKING
†† In the early days of curling, after a game
on the frozen lochs of Scotland, curlers
would get together, stack their brooms
near the fire, share a tasty beverage and
socialize.
†† This tradition, known as broomstacking,
is one of the greatest traditions in sports
and is still alive today from the social
league level all the way up to the World
Championship and
Olympic Games.
†† You can broomstack too! If your team wins, buy your opponent
a drink in the Last Draw Lounge and join them for a chat about
the game.
4
†† A lot of knowledge and history gets passed down during these
times and broomstacking truly is “the spirit of curling.” Share these
moments on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (@broomstacking,
#broomstacking, #prcl).
Getting Started
because knowledge is power.
Where can I learn more about the Pacific Rim Curling League?
†† Keep this Season Guide as a reference and check out prcl.ca
for updates throughout the season.
When are the draw schedules published?
†† Draw schedules are available at prcl.ca. Round 1 is published
mid-September, Round 2 is published early November and
Round 3 is published mid-January.
What if there are some dates during the season when my team is
unavailable to play?
†† Contact us with the details as early as possible (preferably
before the schedule is published!) and we’ll do our best to
accommodate you.
How can I improve my game?
†† The VCC offers curling basic / intermediate clinics and open
ice throughout the season. Check out: vancurl.com/events
and vancurl.com/calendar/openice for more info.
†† The VCC can pair you/your team with a coach for
one-on-one advice.
PRCL NOVICE BOOT CAMP
This new, free program for 2014-15 will provide novice teams with
the opportunity for five weeks of beginner curling instruction with
skilled, knowledgeable coaches, paired with a one-hour game with a
fellow novice team.
Instruction will cover the rules of curling, flow of play, safety, basic
delivery and sweeping technique, basic curling strategy, curling
etiquette and speed of play. Boot Camp will run during the regular
PRCL curling draws for the first five weeks of play (i.e. Round 1) on
Monday evenings. Afterwards, novice teams will play 2-hour, 8-end
games similar to the rest of the league.
Any PRCL members with less than one year of curling experience
are considered to be a Novice, and all curlers in our Novice division
(Division F) will be automatically enrolled. After Round 1 concludes,
all novice teams will be paired with an experienced mentor for the
remainder of the season.

Team Photos (Sept 28/29)
strike a pose.
Year after year, the PRCL flexes its
fashion muscle as the most stylish
set of curlers around. Last season,
teams upped the ante with onesies,
tight pants and a plethora of funky
patterns. If your team wants to be
nominated for “Best Team Uniform”,
have your outfit assembled in time for
team photos!
6
Pink Broom Bonspiel
all the colours of the rainbow.
Only 64 individual spots are available for Vancouver’s most colourful
curling event of the year. The Pink Broom is a one-day funspiel for both
experienced curlers and novices who want to meet other players, learn
more about the sport and try out some different curling game variations.

Hurry Hard Hollywood
Pac Rim Cup 2015
January 23 -25
Thirty two teams from across North America come to Vancouver for
the annual Pac Rim Cup weekend bonspiel. On the ice, the curling is
competitive but friendly. Off the ice, the fun continues with food, games,
prizes, contests and entertainment. All are welcome to participate.
The 2015 theme Hurry Hard Hollywood will be a curling homage to movies
past and present. In 2014, we went to Fabulous Van Vegas.

Honour Roll Inductee
CAROLYN TANNER
Carolyn’s time with the PRCL
dates back to the 1994/95
season. After becoming a board
member in 2005, she then took
on the role as President from
2007 to 2010.
While volunteering countless
hours to keep the league going,
Carolyn also organized the
growing Pac Rim Cup bonspiel
from 2006 to 2010.
“The old VCC had more
challenges when we organized
big events, as there wasn’t the
space (participants exceeded
allowed occupancy), the
facilities were poor (kitchen
was eventually condemned),
and the electrical wattage wasn’t capable of doing the things that can be
done now.” She says when asked to reflect on what it was like organizing
the bonspiel in those days. “We had to be very resourceful and creative.
It was an exciting time to be part of the build-up to the Olympics and the
transition to the new Club.”
Carolyn’s VCC volunteer efforts included the role of PRCL liaison and
member of the VCC Events Planning Committee. She was recognized by
Curl BC as VCC Volunteer of the Year in 2007/08.
On the ice, Carolyn’s team has seen the winner’s circle several times by
capturing the division playoffs at least twice, the first time in the 1997/98
season and again in 2008/09. Carolyn is also a self-proclaimed ‘Old-Fart
Elite’, as a runner up in the Old Farts competition numerous times.
Carolyn exemplifies all of the qualities both on and off the ice we expect
in an Honour Roll inductee. Her long-term, dedicated service has strongly
contributed to building the league to where it is today.

coveted prize.
Team Ordog captured the 2014 crown of
VCC Club Champions by defeating Thursday

PRCL AND QUEER ACTIVE
New for the 2014-2015 season,
Queer Active and the Pacific Rim
Curling League (PRCL) are excited to
announce the formation of a
new youth curling team
bursary program.
With the financial assistance of the two groups, this exciting new
program will enable queer youth 16-25 years old to participate in BC’s
largest curling league for a discounted rate.
Applicants will be asked to provide info on why they want to get active,
any obstacles they have faced, and why they are choosing to participate
in curling. Applicants will be evaluated on demonstrating their desire to
become physically active and need for financial assistance.
By working together, the PRCL and Queer Active hope to create a strong
relationship ensuring the PRCL is accessible to queer youth and achieving
Queer Active’s mission of empowering youth through sports and fitness.
