Distric t Previews August 24, 2014 33AA District 16-4A Division I (H.M. King) Hidalgo Pirates Taihi Jones enters his second year as coach of the Pirates, and they have made the playoffs each of the last two years, falling both times to the H.M. King Brahmas. The Pirates and Brahmas will face each other for the fifth time in three years this season, but with the exception of their first meeting, the Bulls have handled the Pirates successfully. Hidalgo went 4-8 last year and will look to get past the firstround hurdle of the playoffs this year. La Feria Lions La Feria comes into the new district with some familiarity against the other teams, being a fellow Rio Grande Valley school. The Lions went 6-5 last season, including a bi-district playoff loss to fellow district member La Grulla. La Feria will have an experienced defense in place with a young offense, but are hoping that the speed and quickness of those young players will be able to offset their youth. Oscar Salinas is the coach of the Lions. La Grulla Gators The Gators went 7-3 last season and, like H.M. King, advanced to the area round of the playoffs. La Grulla has been a tough team in recent years, and the Brahmas could not clinch their district title until beating the Gators in the final week of the season. Troy Trillayes was selected as Texas Football magazine’s preseason offensive most valuable player in the district. Former Texas A&M UniversityKingsville quarterback Abel Gonzalez is the coach of the Gators. Zapata Hawks The Hawks were a playoff team last year and also advanced to the area round, giving the district three teams that went that far last season. Zapata has a majority of their starters returning and will be senior-heavy this time around, hoping that will help them push further into the postseason after finishing 5-7 last year. Coach Mario Arce runs the slot-T offense for the Hawks, putting the running game at a premium for Zapata. District 16-3A Division I (Bishop) Aransas Pass Panthers Aransas Pass finished second in the district last season and advanced to the area round of the playoffs, losing to eventual state champion Cameron Yoe by just eight points. The Panthers, coached by Antonio Villalon, will have a lot of new starters this year, but a majority of the new starters got their share of playing time last season so should be able to slide right into their spot. Falfurrias Jerseys The Jerseys got off to a strong start last year, but faltered in district games. After starting the season out at 4-1, they ended at 5-5. Falfurrias is returning players all over the field, including the entire secondary on defense. Max McGehee is the head coach of the Jerseys. Lyford Bulldogs The Bulldogs will be moving down in a classification this season after competing in 3A last year and finishing 1-9. The Bulldogs are the team in the district that was most affected by realignment, as all the other schools were in the same classification in the previous years. Lyford, coached by Jaime Infante, will have another young team again this year, but are hoping the adjustment to a new division will help them. San Diego Vaqueros Bo Ochoa’s Vaqueros just missed out on a playoff spot last year after going 4-5. San Diego had won the district title the previous season, and despite not having the same amount of success, kept the same system, which relies heavily on the ground game. That is something that should not change this season as the Vaqueros look to get back to the postseason party. Santa Rosa Warriors The Warriors won a district title last year in coach Arturo Garcia’s first season with an 8-3 record, but had a disappointing loss in the bidistrict round of the playoffs against Goliad. Even after all the regular season success, the Warriors are still looking to improve in Garcia’s second year and are looking for added success in the playoffs.
