It is the strongest and most stable industrial nation in South America and, consequently, the country with most political influence in the free trade zone (Mercosul). In almost 70 years, the urban population grew from 25% to 85% in 2011 and there has been no planning for this high concentration in the urban centers. This is making SWM a huge issue. As the economy continues to grow, the pressure on land prices in urban areas also contributes to the unsustainable nature of open dumps. The next four years are going to be momentous for Brazil. Having hosted the Rio 2012 Earth Summit, the focus is now on The World Cup in 2014. Two years later, Rio de Janeiro will host the Olympics - the eyes of the world are on Brazil like never before. The challenges for Brazil are manifold, and Solid Waste Management is one of the biggest. The government has acted decisively to improve the SWM situation, but accepts that international help and know-how is vital to solving the problems. RWM, the world’s biggest event dedicated to Solid Waste Management, has launched RWM Brazil in order to help introducing new technologies and bridge the knowledge gap. In 2010 legislation was introduced requiring every municipality to close open dumps and pre-treat waste that goes into landfill by the end of 2014. Currently, 85% of waste goes into open dumps. Brazil’s 5565 municipalities have to submit waste plans by the end of 2012 which will mean huge capital expenditure in upgrading equipment and further investment in project management. 2013 and 2014 are crucial years in the implementation of this legislation. Carrying out public-private parterships (PPP) is one key way for Brazilian cities to accomplish goals under the country's national solid waste management plan. Many cities, especially larger ones, have the ability to provide human resources and the technical knowhow to prepare solid waste solutions Besides PPPs, another way to achieve solid waste management goals is to establish intermunicipal government consortiums which are aimed at resolving regional problems. Responsibilities can be divided between each city and town in order to better facilitate the implementation of long lasting efficient solutions. According to Brazil's national solid waste management plan, all open-air dumps throughout the county must be closed by August 2014. Swiss Pavilion SWISSCAM is organizing a collective stand for Switzerland and Liechtenstein companies at the RWM Brazil. The Swiss Pavilion of 56m² is well located and offers the exhibitors designed-to-order booths of 6m², 9m², 12m² or more, where he can display products, catalogues and flyers and also welcome his contacts and potential clients.
