Assistant Supervisor of Special Education
Job Description
Responsibilities:


Supervise and administer all district programs for children with disabilities under the Individuals
and Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
1. Become knowledgeable about the developments and trends in special education,
instructional management and supervision, including attendance at meetings and training
for assistant supervisors.
2. Supervise the location, identification and evaluation process for students with disabilities
3. Consult with teaching staff to determine needs of specific students and programs
4. Consult with teachers to determine instructional materials and supplies needed for
students/programs
5. Collaborate with school district level committees to develop plans and recommendations
for inclusion of students in all aspects of the educational programs.
Provide on-going, regularly scheduled consultation to regular and general education personnel in
the district


















1. On a regular basis visit special education and regular education classrooms to observe
effectiveness of the instructional program and appropriateness of IEP goals and objectives
2. Monitor operation of programs for children with disabilities to ensure operation in
accordance with federal, state regulations and approved policies, procedures and
guidelines.
Act as a liaison with other public and private agencies and individuals who provide services to
students with disabilities in the district.
Disseminate information as appropriate to district personnel, parents and students.
Participate in long range planning for department and district
Participate in budget planning
Assist with mandated reports
Assist with oversight of related service providers and case management
Mentor and develop expertise in special education staff
Communicate in a timely manner with staff, parents, administrators and community agencies
Oversee and ensure completion of IEP meetings in a timely manner
Review timelines and paperwork for compliance
Identify professional development needs
Review IEPs for quality
Attend, co-lead and contribute to Special Education Department meetings
Provide supervision and evaluation for untenured special education staff
Supervise special education enrollment for assigned buildings
Be knowledgeable about special education data on building and district level
Participate and/or facilitate all corrective action plans required by state education department
Minimum Qualifications
BS and/or MS in Special Education
New York State Teaching and Administrative Certification, SBL and/or SDL
At least five years of distinguished experience in the field of education. Experience in school
administration highly desirable.
