Current statistics are outdated and lack information on perception issues, expectations for development, and knowledge of services and accessibility. Such information will enable our team and Partner Organisations to develop programmes for each area, region and country. • Awareness Campaigns We create awareness among family members and communities of the potential which persons with disabilities have. We put necessary support in place and establish links with institutions that can assist. The Challenge Utho Ngathi’s comprehensive “A Road To Changes” Programme, in partnership with Government Agencies and other Non-Governmental Organisations, can effectively address the dire challenges faced by persons with disabilities in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC). Consider the following: • Home Based Care During regular visits, family and community members are helped to understand disability and how to provide the support that can make a difference to not only persons with disabilities, but also themselves. Our team stays in touch with these households to continually assess progress and give ongoing assistance. • Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) We provide individualised therapy and assessment sessions for persons with disabilities who have been identified through home visits. These sessions are set up at community centers. Care givers are also trained and supported to establish community based rehabilitation projects. • Sponsorships Our team establishes a support base of individual and corporate donors to provide ongoing support for education, medical interventions, employment opportunities or other assistance that persons with disabilities or their families may need. Regular donations are encouraged. • Sustainable Economic Development Our ultimate goal is to integrate persons with disabilities into society’s mainstream activities. Education, skills development and viable employment for persons with disabilities are key targets. To this end, business development in areas of wheelchair repair, welding, agriculture, crafts, and tailoring is being undertaken. These projects are accessible and provide economic upliftment for not only persons with disabilities but also their families. “Inclusion the solution” - the inclusion of persons with disabilities into family and community life and into society” • It is estimated that there are more than 18 million persons with disabilities in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. This is at least 10 % of the population. • Only about 2% of persons with disabilities have access to the support and the interventions they need, and • 90% of children with mental disabilities die before the age of 5 years in Africa - this compares to a figure of around 15% for children without disabilities (United Nations) Community Based Rehabilitation Sponsorship Sustainable Economic Development Home Based Care Awareness Campaigns Research Patron: His Excellency Dr Kenneth Kaunda REGIONS Where Utho Ngathi Disability Projects is active SOUTH AFRICA Eastern Cape Province North West Province Gauteng Province ZAMBIA Southern Province
