ANOINTING OF THE SICK
The Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those only
who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the
faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age,
the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly
already arrived. (CCC 1514)
If a person is in need of Anointing of the Sick, please call the
parish office for a priest at 602-242-1300.
If the parish office is closed and there is an immediate danger
of death, please call the after-hours emergency number at
602-246-3534. The after-hours number may only be used for life
and death emergencies.
A Letter from Our
Cathedral Rector
Dear Parishioners,
Last week, I announced the next Teaching Tuesday series entitled, “Teach us to Pray” which we will be offering
after the Tuesday night 6:30PM Masses during Lent (Feb 24 – Mar 24). If it sounded in that letter like I’m really
excited about this series...that’s good. Because it’s true!
I really have to restrain myself from revealing too many details about the series, even though I’m tempted to do so!
But I do want to comment on one particular topic that we will cover, specifically, in one of the talks—a topic that
touches on an experience that I think everyone shares. It is an experience that can be summed up with this question:
Why is it that I always seem to confess the same sins over and over when I go to Confession?
Good question! Important question! Very common question! And a question that we will face head-on in one of the
sessions.
When I recommended the book, Humility of Heart many months (or even a couple of years) ago, one of the things
the author claimed was the fact that pride is at the root of our inability to overcome habitual sins. While that is a true
statement, it’s not exactly helpful from a practical standpoint simply to know that, because it really doesn’t provide a
“road map” to show us how to get out of that pattern. It’s one thing to know something. It’s a whole different thing
to know what do to about it!
But there is a way to deal with this common experience...and it is something we will discuss in detail during one of
the five Teaching Tuesday sessions. I encourage you to mark your calendars now...and to invite a friend or two to
join you.
So, I’m going to leave you with that “teaser”, and end this week’s letter here.
Don’t you wish my homilies were this short??
God’s blessings… my prayers!

Cathedral Parish of the Diocese of Phoenix
Youth
Ministry
Hello, my name is Marissa Heinley and I
am a junior at Bourgade Catholic High
School. I am a graduate of SS. Simon and
Jude school, which is where my service all
began. At the young age of eight, I
attended my first mission in Mexico with
the Youth Group of SS. Simon and Jude.
On the mission we built two houses for
families in need and provided them with simple living
necessities. Never would I have known that, that one
week of hard work would change my life forever. Since
then I have not only become closer to God but have
continued my service through similar projects such as the
San Carlos Mission Trips at Bourgade Catholic and various
activities around both the BCHS and SSJ communities. I
am a leader for SSJ’s ROC, Reach Out for Christ, and a
member of the Youth Group. By being part of both these
groups I am able to continue learning about our faith as
well as help teach it to junior high teens.
I have been asked to fly with students and adults from
our Youth Group across the world where we will build a
house for a community in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Knowing that I will help those in need and be able to
spread God’s grace to those on a completely different
continent excites me!
This mission, though, would not be possible without the
much appreciated support of the SS. Simon and Jude
community and people like you. If you are interested in
financially supporting us on our journey then please feel
free to visit our webpage at http://simonjude.org/youthministry/youth-group/. We will also be having a Second
Collection at all Masses April 11 &12, 2015. Thank you so
much for your generosity.

to 14 years of age. All winners will go on to compete in
the District contest in February. From here they could go
on to State Competition and even to the International
Competition. Applications are available in the parish or
school office, or get one on the day of the event.

2015 CHARITY AND
DEVELOPMENT APPEAL
“Whenever our eyes are open to acknowledge
the other, we grow in the light of faith and
knowledge of God. Let us try a little harder to
take the first step and to become involved.”
~ Pope Francis
Every day, as we move through the routines of our lives,
we observe others in our community. But do we really
see them? When we take the time to see each other
with the same loving compassion that our Lord sees us,
we will become more aware of the signs of need all
around us.
The Charity and Development Appeal is committed to this
mission - and with your help – is able to support over 70
educational, charitable, and spiritual organizations
beyond the boundaries of any one parish.
Please join us in God’s mission to never let our brothers
and sisters go unseen. To make a gift or see more

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
This month, through your gifts of food and
alms in the Poor Box, the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul was able to assist many poor
families, providing food, some help with
utilities, rent and other bills. Thank you so much for your
constant giving! We are always in need of staple items
such as peanut butter, cereal, beans and rice, spaghetti
and spaghetti sauce, tuna, canned meat, canned chili,
canned beans, and canned vegetables. Toilet paper is
such an expensive item so we always need that also.
Drop off your gifts in the SVdP Food Boxes in the rear of
the Church.
Almighty and merciful God, grant us the joy of the
Gospel, let us take care of God’s poor and continue to do
your work on earth. We ask this in the name of your son,
Jesus Christ. Amen.

Una Carta de Nuestro
Rector de la Catedral
Queridos feligreses,
La semana pasada, anuncié la siguiente serie Martes Enseñanza titulado, “Teach us to Pray” ("Enséñanos a Orar"),
unirse a usted.

diocesephoenix.org/cda. Gracias por su apoyo.
