February 03 February 14 February 26 JANUARY 2015 Featured Resident Jack M. A father of two children, a grandfather of 4, a husband for 57 years and a brother to 3 siblings: Jack M.’s life began on February 15, 1924 in Chicago, IL. Jack became a husband on January 20, 1952 when he married Jessie. He made a fine living for his family and himself as an insurance salesman. Jack will tell stories from his “working days,” and readily gives his opinion on matters. He has a good sense of humor, mostly known for his “airport” joke he likes to tell when greeted with “Hi, Jack!” In his spare time Jack prefers to watch TV and nap, but will stay awake to watch his favorite movie, The Godfather. Although Thanksgiving is Jack’s favorite holiday, he prefers a nice steak over any other food and states that his favorite place to go is a steak restaurant. Another great example of Jack’s humorous side is when he was asked to tell us a secret that we would be surprised to know about him, he replied, “If I told you it won’t be a secret.” Mary M. 8 years A Note from Geneva Lake Manor Activities Department Tara W. 8 years The Activities Department will kick off February with a Super Bowl Party. Where did these icons and traditions begin? Who is this Cupid Guy? In Roman mythology Cupid (from Latin cupido: “desire”) is the son of Venus, goddess of love. His counterpart in Greek mythology is Eros, god of love. Cupid is often said to be a mischievous boy who goes around wounding both gods and humans with his arrows, causing them to fall in love. The Romans believed white roses grew where the tears of Venus fell, as she mourned the loss of her beloved Adonis. Her son Cupid, while being stung by a bee, shot arrows in the rose garden; the sting of the arrows became thorns. Venus pricked her foot on a thorn, and the droplets of blood dyed the roses red. Valentine's Greetings The oldest known Valentine gift still in existence today was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. The greeting, written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England. The first commercial Valentine's Day greeting cards produced in the U.S. were created in the 1840s by Esther A. Howland. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as "scrap."
