A New Year’s Blessing Your Encore Family wishes you an abundance of Blessings as we go into this New Year 2015. May 2015 finally bring to this wonderful city of ours, peace, understanding and tolerance that is so necessary in a civilized society. We pray that inflammatory words on all sides, wind down so no more senseless injuries or deaths occur such as occurred the night of Sat., Dec. 20, 2014 with the killings of two innocent officers just there to protect the community. We all have a role to play as bearers of peace, regardless of age, occupation or political persuasion. A single individ‐ ual can do so much towards a more just society. WEB-SAVVY SENIORS Today, web‐savvy seniors are embracing email, blogs and the whole world of informa‐ tion at their fingertips through Google and other search engines. In fact, people over 60 are the fastest growing segment of computer and internet users. Toward this end, Encore is looking into getting several computers in the New Year to assist our members who would like to learn how to use a computer or would like to enhance their skills. Members who have their own laptops can also parti‐ ciate in the classes. It’s important that you know how to recognize elder abuse and how to get help if you’re being abused or you suspect someone you know is being abused. It’s also impor‐ tant to not be a “silent” victim if you’re ever robbed, mugged or taken advantage of through a scam or other type of fraud. You should report these crimes so law enforcement can track down the perpetrators. And you should seek sup‐ port services to help you cope with their psychological impact as well as your safety and financial concerns. Getting Help to Stop Elder Abuse ‐ You can discuss any problems or suspicion you have about elder abuse with complete confidentiality when you call 311 and ask for the Department for the Aging's Elderly Crime Victims Resource Center. After hours, 311 will route you to Safe Horizon's hotline.
