Exercises will involve mathematical computation, interpretation and written response. Exercise topics will require students to discuss the problem and justify the method (think), to do some work by hand or technology (show), and to draw a reasoned conclusion that responds to the initial motivation for the exercise (tell). The course will examine data analysis through statistical graphs, standard deviation, sampling variability, inference, data re-expression, sample surveys and experiments, and probability distributions. Students using data from issues that students are likely to encounter in everyday life from games of chance, politics, business, social sciences, science, and sports. Course Material: • Primary Textbook: Bock, David E, Paul F. Vellemen and Richard D. DeVeaux. Stats: Modeling the World. 4th edition; Boston: Pearson/Addison Wesley, 2014. • Students are expected to have a TI-83, TI-84+, or TI-Inspire calculator for this course. • A graph-paper ruled composition book is required for chapter notes • A binder to keep handouts organized is also required. • In addition, an AP Statistics guide is highly recommended for the second semester. Grading: Quizzes Problem Sets Exams Investigative Tasks Frappys (FRQ) 60% 40% As this is an AP course, the material is presented quickly in order to make sure you have been introduced to all material prior to the exam on May 13th. If you are absent, you are required to keep in touch with me regarding assignments and to use the website and textbook to continue to learn the material. Each chapter builds on the chapter preceding it and all teaching in class will be planned under the assumption that you are reading the textbook and watching the corresponding videos. If you are absent on a due date, your work is still due that day as either a hardcopy or an electronic copy. If you are absent on a test or quiz date, you need to make arrangements with me for a make-up. 2014-2015 AP Statistics Syllabus Paige Rios St Helena High School Course Expectations All work assigned acts as an assessment of conceptual understanding. Given that, each assignment will be scored for accuracy not simply completion. Reading/Videos Problem Sets Investigative Tasks/Frappys Quizzes and Exams Prior to the start of each chapter, students are expected to read the corresponding textbook chapter and take notes. In addition, videos posted on the LMS provide additional examination of each chapter’s topics. Notes should be taken in graph-paper ruled composition book. Each chapter will have a corresponding problem set assigned (usually one per week). Due dates will be listed on the problem sets. Students are encouraged to work on these each night and use them as a tool to guide study groups. Due dates for problem sets are firm. If you are absent, it is expected that you get your problem set turned in. All chapters will have corresponding practice for the free response portion of the AP Exam. Some of these will be done as homework (Investigative Tasks) and some will be done under a time constraint in class (Frappys). They will be graded on the 4-point scale used by College Board. Each chapter or two will have a quiz to assess your understanding of the concepts presented in the chapter(s). In addition, there are Unit Exams to test multiple chapters. The unit exams will all be a combination of multiple choice and free response to give you practice for testing in the style expected on the May exam. 50% Multiple Choice and 50% Free Response.
