An introduction to abstract reasoning in the context of real analysis. Topics may include axioms for the real numbers, mathematical induction, formal definition of limits, density, decimal representations, convergence of sequences and series, continuity, differentiability, the extreme value, mean value and intermediate value theorems, and cardinality. The emphasis, however, is more on the concept of proof than on any given topic. In the first half of the semester, the course is devoted to understand the concept and the structure of proof. We will practice on how to write mathematical arguments. The second half of the semester we focus on the context of real analysis. There are 28 lectures, 2 midterms, 1 final, with 15 homework sets, and 15 quizzes. Homework. To write a mathematical proof requires a lot of exercises. It is unavoidable to do many homework. The plan is to have around 10-15 problems each week. • Due every Tuesday at the beginning of the class. Due is strict. Late=50%. Missing HW=0%, NO MAKE UP. Each HW has at least a weekend to finish. There are 15 homework sets in total. Quiz. We will have a quiz once a week. The problems are chosen from homework and the class material covered in the previous week with small variation. There are in total 15 quizzes. 1 2 MATH-301 SYLLABUS, FALL 2014 Midterms and Final. There are two midterms in the semester. • Midterm 1: October 9th, in class. • Midterm 2: November 11th, in class. There is one final. The date and place will be announced two weeks before the end of semester. • Final: To be announced. The final is largely dependent on the homework and quizzes. The goal of course is to ensure that everyone knows how to write a complete mathematical proof. Grade Scheme. The grade is by accumulating points from class performance. Homework Quiz Midterm 1 Midterm 2 Final Total • Points 100 100 100 100 200 600 • There can be adjustment of Total points according to in class performance including attendance and discussion participation. • The total points is accumulative. This means that no homework or quizzes should be overlooked. • The lowest 3 homework and the lowest 3 quizzes will be dropped from calculating final grade. Final Grade A B C D E • Percentile ≥ 90% 80% ∼ 89% 70% ∼ 79% 65% ∼ 69% < 65% Class Rules. Respect people and don’t make unnecessary noise in class. Turn cell phone to silence. Please speak outside of classroom if necessarily. Food allowed with no chewing sound or strong smell. You are encouraged to ask questions related to class/teaching! Exam Rules. PUID check. No portable electronic device allowed; Turn off cell phone. Makeup. Provided necessary document for your absence to get approval. Schedule a time with the instructor. Makeup exam must be done during the same week of the midterms. CHEATING. STRICTLY PROHIBITED! No points will be accumulated if cheating is approved. Purdue University faculty and students commit themselves towards maintaining a culture of academic integrity and honesty. The students taking this exam are not allowed to seek or obtain any kind of help from anyone to answer questions on this test. If you have questions, consult only an instructor or a proctor. You are now allowed to look at the exam of another student. You may not compare answers with anyone else or consult another student until after you finish your exam and hand it in to a proctor or to an instructor. You may nor consult notes, books, calculators, cameras, or any kind of communications device until after you finish your exam and hand it in to a proctor or to an instructor. If you violate these instructions you will have committed an act of academic dishonesty. Penalties for academic dishonesty can be very severe and may include an F in the course. All cases of academic dishonesty will be reported to the office of the Dean of Students. Your instructor and proctors will do everything they can to stop and prevent academic MATH-301 SYLLABUS, FALL 2014 3 dishonesty during this exam. If you see someone breaking these rules during the exam, please report it to the proctor or to your instructor immediately. Reports after the fact are not very helpful. Calculator. No calculator needed in class and allowed in exams. Accommodations for students with Disabilities. The Department of Mathematics offers alternative testing environments for students who are registered with Disability Resource Center. Students who need accommodations must deliver a copy of their Accommodation Notification Memorandum to the Undergraduate Services Office (MATH 242) and request an information sheet for their course. Memorandums should be delivered to the Undergraduate Services Office (MATH 242) within one week of receipt from the Disability Resource Center. The Information Sheet explains the process for receiving exam accommodations for your mathematics course. Enlarge copies of the information sheets are available upon request. Students currently undergoing evaluation through the Disability Resource Center should also request an information sheet from the Undergraduate Services Office (MATH 242). Emergency. In the event of a major campus emergency, course requirements, deadlines and grading percentages are subject to changes that may be necessitated by a revised semester calendar or other circumstances beyond the instructors control.
