28 January 2015 New Zealand Professional Golf Association Senior Pro Am Waimairi Beach Golf Club Golfing enthusiasts from across the region will be gathering at Waimairi Beach Golf Club for the ARDEX BUTYNOL NZPGA Seniors Pro AM on 12 February 2015, at 12.30pm. Over a hundred players are expected to take part in the event, including Sir Bob Charles, Krishna Singh and Simon Owen. The one day, 18 hole competition is the second in a four part series of Senior Pro Am events including Oamaru, Timaru and Terrace Downs. The Senior Professionals will be playing for a prize pool in excess of $10,000. According to Assistant Tournament Director, Jo Emson, the 40 professional players and 87 amateurs will need to have great putting skills on the day to cope with the speed of the greens. The club’s greens are renowned for running at a fast pace and combined with some difficult undulations putting is expected to be challenging. “This is the first time since the 70’s that our club has held a Pro Am event and the greenkeeper has been preparing the course for several months to make sure it is in its best form,” Emson said. The First Tee of NZ, a charity that teaches golf in schools will benefit from the day with an auction and fun events being held to support this organization and a portion of proceeds also being donated to them. Being located in the east of the city, the Waimairi Beach Golf Club was badly hit during the earthquakes. “The course has been redesigned to a style that incorporates ponds and beachy wastelands, which will make for an exciting tournament because of the accuracy needed by the Pros. With the loss of most of the trees from the course it offers spectators some good viewing options to watch play throughout the course.” Spectators also have the opportunity to win two rounds of golf and a lesson from Club Professional, James Oh, when they present a card or receipt from any of the tournaments participating sponsors. With the earthquake’s destruction still evident in the area, Emson believes this prestigious event is a recovery milestone for the club and local community. “The east of Christchurch is still feeling the effects of the earthquakes. When people travel to the tournament they will travel down roads still pot holed and in many cases graveled. This event gives the eastern community something to look forward to and it’s a celebration for our local golfers. It’s been a pleasure to be part of the team running the event. We are looking forward to the tournament.” Readers are encouraged to check the Waimairi Beach Golf Clubs website www.waimairibeachgolf.co.nz for a poster advertising the event and other participating sponsors.
