Toward the better future of Asian Cities ATAP JAKARTA Monthly Seminar Series ATAP JAKARTA is an organization that conducts activities focused on “future housing” in Jakarta. Indonesia has achieved rapid economic development. In particular, its capital, Jakarta, a megacity typical of Asia, with a population of over 10 million, is always dynamically changing. However, does true happiness lie in the lifestyles and cities brought about by the unfettered forces of economic development? Jakarta is also facing a host of problems: garbage flooding the river, huge traffic jams, air pollution, social disparities, and more. However, most of these are problems previously encountered in Japan. For example, Japan, beginning in the 1960s, went through a period of rapid economic growth, achieving a solution to the problems and a very affluent way of life. However, ever since the economic bubble burst in the early 1990s, the adverse effects of having blindly pursued economic development theretofore have continued to manifest themselves in society. Closed-off living spaces allowed for comfortable thermal environments and effective crime-prevention systems, but they have also given rise to community problems. For instance, with the population aging, elderly people living alone sometimes die without anyone noticing. Large housing complexes and new towns that once seemed like ideal habitations have continued to age and some have been abandoned. 1st Topic: Compact seminar A seminar B 2nd Topic: Energy seminar A seminar B Community & Public seminar A seminar B Mobility seminar A seminar B Accordingly, we started ATAP JAKARTA, which is a joint Indonesia-Japan joint seminar A : Some guests (Indonesian architects, designers, or scholars) give us lectures. Its purpose is to think about Jakarta’s current problems and future problems in tandem and to pursue a new form of living. “Atap” means roof in Indonesian, and we intend to begin by making what is under the roof – that is, “homes” – our first theme. Homes are the primary places of daily life. We will seek to understand living in homes from a different angle, and investigate what kind of place homes should be in the future. Gradually enlarging those “roofs” should not only change Jakarta’s skyline but also help limn the future of Asian cities. 13:00 - 17:00, 25th May, 2013 (Sat.) 13:00 - 17:00, 15th June, 2013 (Sat.) 13:00 - 17:00, 16th Nov., 2013 (Sat.) 13:00 - 17:00, 14th Dec., 2013 (Sat.)
