This also helps in the reduction of expenses by the current mode - of shipping cargoes originating in India, through the ports of Colombo and Singapore. The cargo presently moving over the land route now is through Petrapole – Benapole; which is hampered with heavy congestion. Bangladesh has potential for trade of different commodities; and Vizag would be India’s gateway for cargo movement. India’s imports from Bangladesh had risen steeply to around $639.33 million in 2012 – 13 compared to $254.66 million in 2009 – 10. As per the Ministry of Commerce and Industry release the total bilateral trade surged to $5.78 billion in 2012 – 13. This is in spite of the lack of an efficient connectivity between the two countries. Chittagong is less than 2 days sailing from Visakhapatnam; which in turn is connected to the entire country by an efficient railway system and the Golden Quadrilateral Highway network. Vessel operators look forward to a change in outlook of the Government and the trade for the development of coastal traffic, especially in the sector mentioned, to be able to tap this opportunity.
