February 2015 Published by the Town of Nackawic Updating Nackawic on Recreational, Social, and Cultural Activities TOWN HALL OFFICE HOURS Monday – Friday - 8:15 am - 4:30 pm Council meetings for the month will take place on February 2nd & 16th, 2015 at the Nackawic Lion’s Club. Council meetings are open to the public and are called to order at 7:00 pm. No matter shall be placed on the agenda for consideration at any regular Council meeting unless the request for consideration of the matter is received by the Chief Administrative Officer, in writing, before 12:00 noon on the Friday preceding the day on which the meeting is to be held. DOG TAGS 2015 Dog Tags are available at Town Hall. The cost for dogs that have been vaccinated, spayed or neutered is $15.00. Section 3.01 of By-law S-12 states, “No person who is a resident in the Town of Nackawic shall own a dog without having a valid license for that dog under this by-law”. Fines for not having a dog tag start at $25.00. PLEASE STOOP & SCOOP You are reminded that, By-law S-3, A By-law relating to the Control & Licensing of Dogs, section 7.03 states, “any person having care, custody or control of a dog shall remove forthwith any excrement deposited by said dog on any property in the Town. This does not apply to the dog owner’s property.” Fines range from $25.00 to $200.00. EMO-NACKAWIC Please be advised that in the future, the Lion’s Centre will be used as a warming centre and an information centre for people in the Nackawic area. During power outages and other small scale disasters, the Lion’s Centre will be open providing heat, lights and hot refreshments, water, power to charge electronics as well as information pertaining to the incident at that time. The Building will be powered by a generator large enough to run the entire building. Volunteers will be on hand to assist people who need to make use of this facility. PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT Please be advised that the Public Works Garage is open from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday – Friday. Garbage Collection – You are reminded that ashes are not permitted for weekly garbage collection. Garbage Cans – The Public Works Department is asking for your cooperation during storms on garbage day. Where a median is available, position your garbage can between the sidewalk and the street. Where there is no median, or the median is not wide enough, please position your garbage can at the corner of your yard. This will facilitate our work and expedite the clearing of the sidewalks and streets. The Public Works Department appreciates your cooperation. Parking Restrictions – By-law T-1, states, “During the months of December, January, February and March, between the hours of midnight and 7:00 am, no person shall stop or park a vehicle unattended on any street in the town.” Vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense. Snow Removal – When shovelling or removing snow from your driveway or walkway, please do not leave it on the street, sidewalk, or move it to another property. NEWS ON THE RECREATION FRONT Western Valley PRO Kids and Community Fundraiser Fun Night was another huge success, together we raised over $14,000. We are so grateful for all of our wonderful supporters, without all of you, none of this would be possible. This community and the support from our neighbours continues to amaze me. Looking forward to next year. Public Skating at the Arena – Monday to Friday 1:00 – 2:00 pm Saturday 7:00 – 8:00 pm Sunday 1:45 – 2:45 pm Please note that on February 6th, 7th & 8th (Friday, Saturday & Sunday due to a very large minor hockey tournament there will be no public skating). New – Canadian Tire –Youth borrow a Helmet Program Introduced in our Arena. If you want to borrow a helmet, see Rec. Staff, please simply return it when done. We have 3 sizes, small – medium – large. Western Valley in Motion Sr. Winter Bowling Schedule – have been set; note, all dates are on Thursdays and start at 10:00 am. February 19th – March 19th -- April 16th. Christmas Tree Drop Off – You may drop your christmas tree off at the arena near the back by the Tennis courts, you will notice many already in the area, please do not place them in the dumpster. Songs, stories, action rhymes, puppet shows and crafts. Special Valentine program on February 11th. Blind Date with a Book: From February 2nd to 13th, have a blind date with a book. We will have a display of books which are wrapped to conceal the titles. Each one will have a tag stating only the genre of the book – mystery, romance, fantasy, biography, etc. You have to pick the book and sign it out before you get to know what it is – a great way to discover and try a new author! Browse ‘n Café: On February 13th we will have our annual Valentine treat – waffle/fruit/syrup/whipped! Starting at 11:00 am, waffles will be cooked as we wait – smells great and ensures a really fresh warm waffle! Heritage Week: February 9th – 16th is Heritage week in New Brunswick. We will have a display set up – drop in and see! Free Wifi: Free wifi is available 24/7 at the library. During the school year, you will need a password to access the network between 8 am and 4 pm – library staff will provide you with a password. Outside of those hours, (and during the summer months) the wifi is completely open and does not require a password. LIBRARY IS OPEN REGULAR HOURS DURING MARCH BREAK! Kicking off the year with a Valentines Social, pot luck at 6:30. Couples and singles are all welcome. It is our 18th Anniversary of “Ladies Night Out” so come out and enjoy a fun night of laughter and fellowship! FOOD HANDLING COURSE At the St. Clements Anglican Church (6839 Route 102 Dumfries) on Friday, February 13th, 2015 at 9:30 am. There is no cost for this course. This course is given by the Department of Health & sponsored by the Anglican Church Women. NACKAWIC AXE-L SKATING CLUB Are you looking to clean out and give away old costumes or scrap material? The Skating Club will gladly take them off your hands. We are always looking for gently used animal, princess, story book costumes, etc. Or any type scrap material to make costumes for the children in our ice show held in March every year. Watch for details of this year’s Annual Ice Show – “Circus on Ice” coming in March at the Nackawic Arena. LION’S CLUB Christmas was good to us. This year we sold 136 Christmas trees at Robins. This is an important fundraiser for us. We would like to thank the staff and management at Robins for their help. The VIP dinner - was held December 6th and 60 people VIP (senior without partner) shared a ham meal. We would like to thank everyone who participated, John Stairs for providing the music and the Legion and Lions members for helping to serve the meal. Christmas Daddies – The Lion’s Club with the help of churches, students, Mill employees and many others, 45 families received Christmas boxes of food, clothes and toys. Bowling Alley – Tuesday night is senior bowling and open bowling is on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. It is also available for parties. Please Call Maryanne at 575-2361. This year, why not make the most of it and enjoy the season by getting out on our local cross country ski trails! The Nackawic Bend Ski Club is committed to grooming and maintaining trails in our community; the Ski Club area on Rt. 105 and, new this year, we are starting a new partnership and making trails on the Nackawic Golf Club. Through the season we will be offering group ski events, Kids Fun Ski Day, potlucks at the camp, and other fun gatherings. A Moon Ski & Music Jam will take place at the Nackawic Golf Course & Club House on Saturday, Feb. 7th, from late afternoon until late evening. This event is hosted by the Nackawic Bend Ski Club in celebration of the near full moon. The restaurant and bar will be open, musicians will frolic acoustically in and open jam, and with mother nature’s help, we plan to ski our xc trails into the night for those who would like to try night skiing. NACKAWIC AND AREA WELLNESS Bulk Buying –the Bulk Buying Club is setting up a distribution centre in Nackawic. Membership is $10 per year with a fee of $15 for each monthly order that you place. With our own local distribution we hope to expand what is offered and to make available surplus produce for sale to volunteers. Starting in February, drop off and pick up days have changed to Wednesdays and the pick-up centre is Kirk United Church. Tax Clinic – a free Tax Clinic will once again be available for *seniors*, those whose income is below $40,000 and *students*. VALENTINE’S DAY BRUNCH St. Simon and Jude Catholic Church will be holding their annual Valentine’s Day Brunch on Sunday February 15th from 12 noon on. The menu will consist of pancakes, sausages, beans, juice, tea and coffee. All are welcome. A dessert auction will follow and the brunch.
