Arts House in association with Melbourne Festival presents MARZO Dewey Dell (Italy) Castellucci & Eugenio Resta by Agata Castellucci, Demetrio Castellucci, Teodora Concept Six eerie beings dance out a ferocious drama amid the foreboding rumblings of an icy alien landscape. Winter fades, and spring blooms in violence. Dynamic young Italian artists’ collective Dewey Dell have joined forces with manga artist Yuichi Yokoyama and Kuro Tanino, Artistic Director of Japanese theatre company Niwagekidan Penino, to create Marzo, an impeccably stylized dance work with a stunning visual aesthetic – eccentric and fantastical. A strikingly brilliant eccentric exploration of love and hate, war and peace, Marzo takes its name from the month of March, which since ancient times has represented the month of war. Evoking the gamut of human conflict and emotion, Marzo’s uncanny and bizarre beings move in an icy landscape amid threatening sounds, playing out their story of good and evil; love and hate; and war and peace. Lifting its name from William Faulkner, Dewey Dell was formed in 2007 by four young artists: Teodora, Demetrio and Agata Castellucci (children of the famous theatre director, writer and artist Romeo Castelluci): and Eugenio Resta. Last seen in Melbourne as part of the Next Wave Festival in 2012 with Cinquanta Urlanti, Quaranta Ruggenti, Sessanta Stridenti and Grave, Dewey Dell continues to garner attention as a unique and highly original force in European dance. “There is a miraculous detail in each thrust of the hand and each held gesture… I imagined, for a moment, what it might be like to be the alien.” Chris Boyd on Cinquanta Urlanti, Quaranta Ruggenti, Sessanta Strident Meet the artist -‐ Post show on Saturday 11 October, members of Dewey Dell discuss the influences that informed the creation of Marzo, and its distinctive fusion of dance, sound and visual design. Marzo is co-‐produced by steirischer herbst, BUDA Kunstencentrum and Centrale Fies Dro, with the support of Tanzfabrik Berlin and the University of Zagreb – Student Centre Zagreb – Culture of Change and Schaubühne Lindenfels. Dewey Dell is supported by the City of Melbourne through Arts House, and by Advancing Performing Arts Projects, and is part of the project Fies Factory/Centrale Fies.
