Dell, Inc. Competitive Advantage The Dell DR4100 and DR6000 Turn the Tables on the Quantum DXi 6700 by Offering Features without Licensing Fees or an Annual Support Tax By Charley McMaster, DCIG Senior Analyst Deduplicating backup appliances such as the Dell DR4100, Dell DR6000 and Quantum DXi 6700 can look very similar on the surface. It is only when organizations begin to look at the specific features of these three appliances and how they are delivered that it becomes apparent that the Dell DR4100 and DR6000 offer four distinct competitive advantages over the Quantum DXi 6700 resulting in a lower total cost of ownership (TCO). COMPANY Dell, Inc. One Dell Way Round Rock, TX 78682 512.728.3653 Founded 1984 www.dell.com INDUSTRY Technology SOLUTION Dell DR4100 and DR6000 DIFFERENTIATORS • All-inclusive software licensing • Faster backups using existing network protocols • Higher capacity, more efficient data storage • No annual support tax The Dell DR4100, Dell DR6000 and Quantum DXi 6700 can, on the surface, look very similar in terms of feature functionality and capabilities. It is only when organizations begin to look at the total cost of ownership (TCO) of each of these three appliances that it becomes apparent that the Dell DR4100 and DR6000 offer four distinct competitive advantages over the Quantum DXi 6700. • Secures data during replication at no extra cost. With all of the security breaches occurring today, encrypting data as it is replicated becomes almost an imperative. Dell includes in-transit AES-256 bit encryption at no extra charge on both its DR4100 and DR6000 appliances. While the Quantum DXi6700 also offers in-transit encryption, it requires an extra licensing fee. • No annual support tax. The Dell DR4100 and DR6000 each have a 3 year warranty whereas the Quantum DXi6700 only includes a 1 year warranty. Since many organizations keep their deduplicating backup appliances in production for 3 years or more, the Quantum DXi6700 hits organizations with an annual support “tax” beginning the second year • More data stored in less space. The Dell DR4100 and Quantum DXi 6700 both support a maximum raw capacity of 108TBs while the DR6000 tops out at 240TB. However the Dell DR4100 and DR6000 can store more data in less space as they use 3 and 4 TB near line SAS hard disk drives (HDDs) while the Quantum DXi 6700 still only offers 2TB SATA HDDs. These larger HDDs on the Dell DR4100 and DR6000 reduce floor space and power consumption while storing the same amount or more of data. • Faster backups with less hassle. Symantec OST has long accelerated backup using proprietary network protocols. While both Dell and Quantum support Symantec OST, the Dell DR6000 eliminates the need for it with its Rapid NFS/Rapid CIFS backup acceleration software. Organizations can use this option at no extra charge and without making changes to their existing LAN. Using Rapid NFS/Rapid CIFS, ANY backup software can use it to send backup data to the Dell DR6000 appliances over industry standard CIFS or NFS file sharing protocols. Further, using Rapid NFS/Rapid CIFs, organizations can achieve up to 8x the number of concurrent backup streams that the DXi 6700 supports resulting in organizations potentially seeing increases in backup performance and shorter backup windows. “The all-inclusive licensing model of the Dell DR4100 and DR6000 coupled with their respective 3 year warranties ensures that organizations get the secure, faster and less intrusive backups at a lower total cost of ownership than the Quantum DXi 6700.” — Charley McMaster, DCIG Senior Analyst Making a buying decision between feature rich solutions such as the Dell DR4100, DR6000 and Quantum DXi 6700 is never easy. But for organizations who need a solution that meets their breadth of backup needs while holding the line on costs, the all-inclusive licensing model of the Dell DR4100 and DR6000 coupled with their respective 3 year warranties ensures that organizations get the secure, faster and less intrusive backups at a lower total cost of ownership than the Quantum DXi 6700.
