Summer 2015
SUMMER SCHEDULE AND PROGRAM INFORMATION
SUMMER FUN AT
CAMP EL-O-WIN
A Mountain of Summer Fun and Adventure!
About Camp El-O-Win
Camp El-O-Win is nestled among fir and pine trees about 15 miles
from Shaver Lake (approximately 65 miles northeast of Fresno) at
an elevation of 5,500 feet. The sparkling waters of Dinkey Creek
run through camp. It is surrounded by US Forest Service land. The
camp is owned and operated by the Friends of Camp El-O-Win, a
volunteer run, independent, nonprofit 501c3 corporation.
The 58 acre property has a dining hall/kitchen; office building;
storage; infirmary; sleeping quarters for the Administrative Staff,
program, kitchen and maintenance staff; and shower houses.
Campers sleep in cabins, shelters, platform tents or under the
stars in one of five sleeping units/areas: Arapaho, Iroquois,
Chippewa, Shoshone and Pueblo. All units have tribe names
because El-O-Win sits on land that was once home to Native
Americans during the summer months. Families are invited to visit the camp during our Open House event on
Sunday, June 14th from 10am – 3:00pm. Bring a picnic lunch, take a tour, walk the trails and dip your toes in the icy
waters of Dinkey Creek.
What Will My Daughter Get Out of Camp?
What a girl learns at camp goes beyond how to make a lanyard or cook dinner over a campfire…it is really about
helping her to learn about herself. The choices she makes in life growing up and as an adult are largely dependent
on how she sees herself, how she values herself and her contribution to this world. Our job is to keep each girl
safe, to offer her new FUN activities to try, to facilitate her “outside the box” thinking and by example, demonstrate
taking responsibility for your actions and compassion for others and the environment. Camping experiences are
offered in progression basic to advanced which nurture each girl’s:
awareness of herself, her self-worth and self-esteem;
competencies;
spirit of adventure, having fun, participating in new experiences;
opportunity to learn new skills;
opportunity to step into leadership positions;
camaraderie; and
respect for the land and an in-depth understanding of and appreciation
for for our fragile environment.

Summer 2015
Summer Resident Camp
The fun begins when you drive through El-O-win’s front gate!
Activities:
No matter which program you sign up for, you will get to participate in traditional camp activities: arts & crafts; river/wildlife/
nature exploration; hiking; archery; campfires and songs and roasting s’mores; stargazing; horseback riding; swimming in the
creek; mountain biking; skits; and cooking over an open fire!
Transportation:
Campers are transported to and from Camp El-O-Win by parents.
Accommodations:
Campers are assigned to living units based on the program for which they register. In all units, campers sleep on metal cots
and mattresses. 24 campers sleep in Arapaho’s 4 cabins. 15 Iroquois campers sleep in 3 platform tents. 24 Chippewa campers
sleep in 3 large wooden teepees across the bridge on the north side of Dinkey Creek. Staff have their own cabin/tent in each
unit. Each unit has a hand washing water “trough” with multiple faucets and a Biffy (Bathroom In Forest For YOU).
Staff:
Campers are supervised 24 hours a day by our enthusiastic energetic fun-loving camp staff, most of whom are college age.
Staff are trained to be positive supportive role models, safety fanatics, part comforting mom, part challenging mentor….many
found their love for camping at El-O-Win. It is tradition for staff to pick a “camp name”, which could be something silly or reflect
the counselor’s interests or favorite animal. Campers often choose camp names also.
