Mark Hurter Farmers in the Paarl and Franschhoek area have seen the rural crime-rate drop by 70% since the specialist security company Centurion Security Solutions have taken them under their protective wing. According to local crime statistics the incidence of crime reached an all-time high as a wide range of crimes were reported, at one stage one criminal incident every two days. Since Centurion Security Solutions have started their security services in the area a remarkable drop in criminal incidence has been experienced, so much so that this highly specialized company now looks at expanding their services to also include alarms and the monitoring of private residences in the greater Paarl and Franschhoek areas. Vir oud-platebaas Boet Pretorius was dit ‘n droom kom waar om ‘n duet album (Gé Korsten: Kom Sing ‘n Lied – in Duet) van vandag se kunsternaars saam met Gé op te laat neem, maar dit was ‘n maklike taak nie. “Dit was in 2012 toe Pino Di Benedetto van EMI-platemaaskappy my vertel van ‘n groot hoeveelheid bande met Gé-opnames wat by hulle in die argiewe lê,” vertel Boet. “En of ek nie wou kyk of ons daarvan kan gebruik nie.” Dit was ‘n reuse-soektog om die regte masjiene te vind om die bande digitaal oor te dra, maar die nodige masjien is by die SAUK opgespoor. Met Gé as tenoor, is daar net sekere vroue-kunstenaars wat ek kon kies wat sou pas by die sleutel waarin hy sing. Soos Nianell, Rina en Corlea.” Die album open met Gé en Corlea wat Kom sing nou ‘n lied uitvoer. Joe Niemand is die gas op Ek het geen vrees, terwyl Nianell saam met Gé nuwe lewe gee aan Jerusalem. Steve kan gehoor word op Mag God U seën. Ook Carike Keuzenkamp, Kris Jay, Derick Ellis, Manie Jackson en Rocco de Villiers lewer bydraes, terwyl Gé die liedjie O Vader op sy eie sing. Met die duet-opnames was dit asof almal met nuwe respek na Gé luister en kyk, vertel Boet Pretorius. “Vir my was dit baie emosioneel. Ek het 36 albums vir Gé opgeneem en hy was ‘n goeie vriend. Toe Nianell terugluister, kon ek sien daar was trane in haar oë. Bookings essential – 021 864 2778 or [email protected] 12|FEBRUARY 2014 SPICE ROUTE Boyd MercedesBronwyn Labuschagne T H E S P I C E R O U T E W I N E RY S O U T H A F R I C A SPICE ROUTE WINES PRE-HARVEST REPORT Preparing for our 2014 harvest As harvest 2014 draws closer, we met with a cool, calm and collected Charl du Plessis – Spice Route Wines winemaker - and asked him to share his thoughts and predictions on this year’s harvest. “Overall our dryland vineyards are in great condition - even better in comparison to last year. The unusual heavy rainfall we experienced in the second week of January 2014 was of no detriment to our vineyards, but rather of much benefit, allowing the grapes to develop at an optimal level. The Swartland vineyards are tremendously dependent on the region’s winter rainfall, which allows water reserve build-up to occur. A continuous supply of water in this dormant period is crucial and guarantees balanced fruit ripening on the unirrigated vineyards at the Klein Amoskuil farm in the Swartland. In previous years our average rainfall on the farm was 450mm per annum, predominantly from June to August, with an even spread from month to month. However, after the recent rainfall we received approximately 668mm of rain this year, including early rains which helped the wheat farmers, who maintain a key part of the region’s agriculture. This is the second highest annual rainfall recorded in 12 years during my time at Spice Route. Further to the abundance of rain, this past winter was relatively cold, giving the vines more time to rest and enabling us to prune late in October, with first buds appearing towards the second half of the month. The cold winter coupled with heavy rains doesn’t only promise a balanced crop this coming harvest, but also allows for reserves for the 2015 harvest. Following the cold winter, spring has had some variable weather, with thunder storms in November combining humidity, warmth and nitrogen in the air, all factors that increase cryptogrammic pressure in the vineyards in the form of Downy Mildew. Some of the more sensitive varieties like Grenache were affected, but thanks to small and loose bunches overall the impact was minimal on the farm. Heavy rainfall occurred well into summer, which required a watchful eye on cryptogrammic pressure, namely Downy Mildew but no damage occurred. The first variety to start the veraison process is our Pinotage, commencing ten days later than it did in 2013. We expect to start harvesting about ten days later than we did in 2013, and hope for favourable weather conditions. Harvest nearly always commences with our old Viognier bushvine on shale (sometime in early February, depending on the summer heat), and thereafter the Pinot Gris. More to come soon,” says Charl.
