The students stuffed the bed of a pick-up truck with over 30 boxes of food! When the boxes were delivered, the Metropolitan Ministries volunteers expressed heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the entire Corbett Prep community for their generous donation of 693 pounds of food! The volunteers were amazed with the amount and variety, which made Thanksgiving possible for a multitude of families in the Tampa Bay Area. The Student Council would like to send a huge “Thank You!” to the entire Corbett Prep community for making our food drive such an enormous success! STEM IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL DURING AND AFTER SCHOOL HOURS: APPLYING STEM CONCEPTS. Mrs. Cardona’s sixth and seventh grade classes for Trimester I took their learning to an exciting level of engineering, mathematics and scientific concepts by using one of America’s favorite dolls…Barbie. The task for small groups was to create a bungee cord that would allow her to fall safely from the middle school’s second story floor. The Middle Schoolers had one class period to design a bungee cord that would drop Barbie 192 cm, taking into account gravity, terminal velocity, resistance and elasticity of the rubber bands given. Each group of 3 - 4 students, was given a Barbie doll, access to rubber bands, a large piece of paper, some tape, and a measuring tool. They were directed to be sure that all rubber bands are the same size and thickness. Students were guided to use science and mathematics to design the right length Bungee. The team that reached Barbie closest to the ground, won the challenge. Mrs. Cardona is very proud of the hard work, creativity and effort the students put into this activity! AFTER SCHOOL STEM CHALLENGE: The students in the after-school Science Brain Bender Challenge group had the opportunity to measure the thickness of a sheet of aluminum foil through a process of calculating the thickness of atoms and how big an aluminum atom actually is, They were able to accomplish this task by using standard equipment in our Middle School which was quite the challenge! The foil was measured at 0.0159 mm, which compares well to the industry value of 0.0160 mm. Bravo to inquiring minds! AWHOLENEWWORLDOFHISTORYFORUPPERPRIMARY (Brilliant Bugs, Mighty Monkeys and Cool Cats) On Monday, December 1, the Upper Primary students boarded Corbett Prep busses and traveled to downtown Tampa to visit the Tampa Bay History Center. Our most recent unit of inquiry, “A Whole New World” was focused on the indigenous people of our country and immigration. This trip was a perfect culminating event which brought a local connection to our studies. The History Center is a museum focused on the history and heritage of Florida and the Tampa Bay region. From the earliest native peoples and Seminole Wars, to the growth of transportation and industry, the History Center covers 12,000 years of Florida’s past. During the two-hour guided tour and hands-on activities, students explored significant people, ideas and events that have helped shape our region and state. Some of the questions addressed were: Who were Florida’s early indigenous people and how were they affected by the arrival of European explorers? What key events caused Seminole Indian culture to change and adapt over time? Which industry put Tampa on the map and who were the immigrants central to that story? Our Upper Primary students enjoyed learning about their community’s history and eating lunch together in a beautiful Tampa Bay setting! INTERMEDIATEDIVISION invites you to the 2014-2015 Corbett Prep Science Fair. As many of you know, our intermediate students have spent many hours completing science fair projects. We would like for you to have the opportunity to view these projects. All fifth grade students are required to complete a project. Many third and fourth grade students have also gone above and beyond in completing a project as well. These projects will be on display in the Grand Room starting Tuesday, December 9 through noon on Wednesday, December 10. Please take a few moments to come by and see these projects. You, too, will be impressed with their scientific investigations and findings! 2 PARENT FACULTY ASSOCIATION (PFA) NEWS BY PFA PRESIDENT, PAMELA SZABO THE SPRING OF TAMPA BAY – ANNUAL DONATION DRIVE – Corbett Prep has been a longtime supporter of The Spring of Tampa Bay, Hillsborough County's only certified Domestic Violence Prevention and Emergency Shelter. FUNRUN‐SATURDAY,NOVEMBER22: Coaches Folen, Heller, Hill, Kava, and Romero are proud to report about our Annual Fun Run. It was a beautiful morning with many smiling faces as runners prepared to take part in our 2-mile run, our 1-mile run, or our ½ mile peacock trot. The turnout for the run was outstanding with over 200 runners taking part in the three races. RESULTS The 2-mile run saw a new Corbett Prep record in the Girls’ Primary Division. Kindergartner, Chloe Cabrera broke the record time that she set last year by running the 2mile race in 20:38. In the 1-mile race, a huge turnout of runners was the first of a couple of records shattered. In the Primary Division, Nicholas Smith set a new record time of 7:28 in the 1-mile race. Finally, in our Peacock Trot (½ mile race), we saw a huge field of all ages running and cheering for our primary runners as they ran, jogged, skipped, and walked their way around the track. The inaugural Corbett Prep Health Fair was also a tremendous success. Health centered organizations within our school community and the greater community participated to make it both fun and an educational experience. It was a great day for family, friends and community. The Physical Education team would like to recognize and thank all the volunteers who came out to help with the events. Special recognition goes to our PFA event chairs, Cathy Webb and Liz Gonzalez, who went above and beyond to create a unique new event while making the fun run another great success. 3 THESPIANS SHINE ON STAGE AT DISTRICT COMPETITION! On Saturday, November 22, twenty-eight of our Middle School students traveled to Blake High School in Tampa to compete in the District Individual Events Competition. This event allows students to perform in any of 13 categories, to be judged by three theatre professionals on their work. They are then given a score (Poor, Fair, Good, Excellent, Superior) and comments on what they did well and what areas they can improve upon. This year we competed against schools from Tampa and all the way to Sarasota and Bradenton. Troupe 88622, as we are known in the Thespian world, did amazingly well!!! Of our 27 different pieces, 18 earned a rating of Superior and 6 earned a rating of Excellent! Fifth graders conduct experiments in a Middle School science class as part of a preview of sixth grade life. Every year, Corbett Preparatory School of IDS invites its current fifth graders to preview Middle School life and its academics by having them spend time in the core classes in which they will enroll the following year. It is an interactive experience designed to assist in the transition from the East to the West Side of campus. Offered each fall, the orientation helps students learn about the many options available in Middle School and answers questions about what to expect. Parents attend their own orientation separately as guests at an open house. Middle School teachers planned mini-lessons for the student groups, appealing to multiple learning styles with brain-based activities. Everyone donned goggles in science for an investigation lab where they tested the acidity of mystery liquids. In English, teacher Kat Quin guided students through new vocabulary words so they could “stun, amaze and occasionally, stupefy” their audiences. Social Studies guests journeyed to Egypt and became archaeologists trying to rebuild the ancient White Chapel. The math team used clocks to introduce modular arithmetic, a concept students will build upon in the future with more complicated applications. The trip to Middle School also gave fifth graders a chance to hear directly from students who had been in their shoes. Please turn over for the rest of the article. Students put on their goggles for an investigation lab where they tested the acidity of mystery liquids. A Morning at Middle School: Fifth Graders Preview Sixth Grade at Corbett Prep The story is continued here. Sixth graders wrote letters packed with words of wisdom, answering many of the questions they had when they started Middle School. They also shared electives they love, what it’s like to have a locker, how they manage their time and the ways they stay organized. “It is awesome being a student in Middle School at Corbett Prep, with all of the helpful teachers and friends,” one sixth-grade girl wrote. “They will ensure you have a great year.” Sixth graders offered tips to the incoming class about class selection, time management and handling new and additional responsibilities. Corbett Prep’s Middle School balances a rigorous academic environment with a caring learning community. Highly trained teachers provide a strong support network and continue the personalized learning experience that begins with PreK3, preparing students to soar in whatever high school they choose. The sixth-grade preview energized many of the students about the upcoming year. “I can’t wait for all the classes I’m going to take,” Kyle Fanelli said. Founded in 1968, Corbett Preparatory School of IDS (formerly Independent Day School - Corbett Campus) is a fully accredited, nonsectarian private school in Tampa’s Carrollwood neighborhood.
