It shows ripe fruit on the palate with well-embedded tannins and a long finish. It has good ageing potential. It may not be a traditional Piemontese wine, but it makes an excellent match for Piemontese ravioli, roasts, and poultry dishes. In 1993, Tino Colla and his niece, Federica created Poderi Colla in Langhe Albesi. Born into a family with generations of wine growers, they were driven by their family tradition and their desire to build something of their own. Poderi Colla is comprised of three properties each specializing in growing different types of grapes and covering a near-complete spectrum of Alba winemaking. All of the wine bottled is made from grapes grown on the estate, ensuring greater direct control at every step in the process, from vineyard cultivation to winemaking, maturing and bottling. Their philosophy of naturalness and originality of wines, hails from the exceptional vineyards and from winemaking techniques that respect the grapes. They are dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the wine’s original characteristics without forcing flavor into fashionable stereotypes. The wines are “human” not “high-tech” with an outstanding natural concentration of well-balanced components bestowed by the terroir and the vine (not by wood or machinery). PROFILE In 1993, Tino Colla and his niece, Federica, decided to join forces and create a new wine venture in the setting of the Langhe Albesi, driven by their attachment to their roots – those of a family that had been wine growers for generations – and by the desire to build something all their own while at the same time abiding by tradition. Poderi Colla comprises the following properties: Cascine Drago in Alba; Tenuta Roncaglia di Barbaresco and the Dardi Le Rose estate in Monforte. Three properties occupying outstanding sites, each specialising in growing different types of wine and covering a near-complete spectrum of Alba winemaking. Beppe Colla, Federica’s father and Tino’s brother, makes a fundamental contribution: over 60 years (his first harvest was back in 1949) of unique, impassioned, top-level experience in the production of Alba’s fine reds. Tino’s eldest son, Pietro, has been playing an active role on the Colla team since 2007; he was born in 1980 and has followed in the family’s footsteps by attending the Alba Winemaking School and graduating in oenology at Turin University in 2006. All the wine - around 150,000 bottles yearly - is made from grapes grown on the estate, thus ensuring greater direct control at every step in the process, from vineyard cultivation to winemaking, maturing and bottling. PHILOSOPHY Our number one priority is the concept of the naturalness and originality of wines hailing from exceptional, indeed unique, vineyards and produced using a winemaking technique that respects the grapes and the wine and sets out to maintain and enhance the latter’s original characteristics without attempting to force its flavour into fashionable stereotypes. Most of today’s wines tend to be very similar despite being obtained from very different climates and varieties: dense, dark wines with a high alcohol content and a great deal of wood, difficult to drink or match with food. We want to move in an entirely different direction, seeking not extremes and overstatement, but balance, subtlety and original nuances. Our wines are not “high-tech”. They are “human”, with an outstanding natural concentration bestowed by the terroir and the vine (not by wood or machinery) and well-balanced components. They are wines made to be relished, not to astound at perfunctory tastings. The key adjectives we may use to highlight their style are: 1. Classic: Not traditional, which may have a negative connotation. By classic, we mean showing continuity with the fine wines of the past. 2. Original: The qualities of the grapes and terroir are paramount. Natural: From vineyard to bottle, from grape to wine, with as little interference, technological manipulation (concentration, filtration etc.) and additives (enzymes, tannins, wood etc.) as possible. 4. Enjoyable 5. Quaffable 6. Easy to match with food: which it complements, and which in turn complements the wine. These are the hardest wines to produce because they need to be naturally good, as we add nothing and correct nothing. HISTORY The history of the Colla family is closely intertwined with that of vine growing and winemaking. The first written records date back to 1703 and mention a Carlo Colla, producer and seller of “barrels of rosé, casks of red wine and gallons of Moscatello” in Santo Stefano Belbo. In 1778 Pietro, Carlo’s grandson, purchased a vineyard at Castiglion Tinella, near Arzignano (now called San Giorgio), and on marrying Antonia, daughter of Giovan Battista Negro, joined his new father-in-law in the management of his estates, and in Browse our full portfolio at sevenfifty.com/lanternawines Jeff Sarfino Lanterna Distributors [email protected] 443-838-2521 Maryland particular in the growing and sale of Moscatello wine and grapes. The subsequent generations stayed on in Castiglion Tinella and continued in the winemaking business of their forebears. More recently, in 1909, then fifteen-year-old Pietro (Beppe and Tino’s father, Federica’s grandfather) began work at Gancia, where he learned the difficult art of the Méthode Champenoise straight from the man who had first imported it from Champagne decades earlier. There, Pietro worked alongside the fathers of modern winemaking: oenologists of the calibre of Arnaldo Strucchi and Carlo Mensio, and the experience he acquired at Gancia led to him being courted by many major firms of the day, such as Martinazzi of Turin and Fratelli Ferrero of Trofarello, for which he worked as head of sparkling wine production. Meanwhile, Pietro had bought an estate at Moncucco di Santo Stefano Belbo – one of the “historical crus” in the heart of the Moscato country, where he put his technical know-how to good use by producing wine (80% of which was Moscato) from his own vineyards and selling it both in Italy and abroad (in Switzerland, Argentina and Abyssinia). Pietro married Luigina Albertino and had four children: Celestina, Beppe, Maria Rosa and Tino, although only the sons entered the winemaking business directly. Giuseppe, “Beppe” for short, was born in 1930 and qualified at the Alba Winemaking School in 1949. His first job was with Bonardi of Alba, at the time a major estate, where he worked on reds, dry and sweet sparkling wines, fortified wines and vermouth. Beppe purchased Alfredo Prunotto’s firm in 1956, keeping its old name, and this is where he began developing his passionate views on Alba reds, in the constant pursuit of quality that was to turn the estate into one of the finest in the Alba area, and in Italy as a whole. This was the approach that, in 1961, made him the first to begin selecting and vinifying the grapes from the great Langhe vineyards separately, naming them on the labels. Thus were the “cru” wines born. Beppe’s commitment to promoting Alba wines extended beyond his private business: from 1960 to 1970 he was instrumental in the demarcation of the Alba DOC production areas and the drafting of the production regulations; he was also one of the founder-members, in 1967, of the Ordine dei Cavalieri dei Vini e del Tartufo di Alba (Order of the Knights of the Wine and Truffles of Alba), the first voluntary association working to revive and promote the Alba area’s oenological and culinary culture, holding the post of the Order’s Gran Maestro from March 1994 to December 2000. He chaired the Barolo, Barbaresco and Alba Wine Consortium for three years, from 1986, and the Wine & Spirits Division of the Cuneo Province’s Union of Industrialists from 1980 to 1992. Ernesto, “Tino” for short, Pietro’s youngest son, was born in 1949. He, too, qualified at the Alba Winemaking School, in 1969, then acquired initial experience at Beaune, in Burgundy, under Jean Siegrist. He subsequently worked as a technical expert for various Piedmontese estates, working on grappa distillation and red and white wines. In time, he also acquired experience in business administration and entered into partnership with a small cellar in Gavi. He flanked his brother, Beppe, at Prunotto as sales manager from 1986 to 1994. Beppe and Tino’s children are the latest Colla generation. Federica was born to Beppe and wife Lidia, née Veglio, in 1965. After taking a degree in Political Science at Milan’s Catholic University, she chose to follow in her father’s footsteps and enter the world of fine wine. In 1990, she completed an advanced course in wine and spirits management, marketing and business administration run by the O.I.V. in Paris; she then worked in wine publishing, contributing to Arcigola Slow Food, and acquired a wealth of experience on several foreign markets. Tino is married to Bruna, née Marchiaro, and has two children: Francesco, who was born in 1983 and has made his career in music, and Pietro, born in 1980, who has carried on the family tradition as an oenologist, thus writing a further chapter in the family’s winemaking saga. VINEYARD MANAGEMENT Environment compatibility and respect for the vines are the hallmarks of our work in the vineyard, the aim being not to upset the natural rhythm, but to foster it. The grass grown between the rows, both to counter soil erosion and to rein in the vegetative vigour of the vine, is mowed mechanically; the fertilisers used are predominantly organic and applied only where necessary, which means sporadically, tailoring the methods and doses to plant requirements and soil conditions. As far as pest and disease control is concerned, we have for years opted for what is known as supervised control: the rational use of pesticides, pared down to the minimum, restricted solely to the periods at risk and applied in small doses. Our estate has been taking part since 1995 in the regional farming environment programmes, which apply the Community regulations setting out to cut and rationalise fertiliser and pesticide use, and the whole process is monitored and supervised by public and private bodies as a guarantee for our methods. We achieve a balanced output in quantitative terms by green harvesting the excess clusters, if necessary, at the onset of ripening (when the grape changes colour, in other words). YIELDS PER HECTARE The yield per hectare is about 40-50 hectolitres per hectare, well below the limit set by the production regulations. Altitude, soil composition, exposure, the vine’s vegetative balance and working the vineyards in accordance with the natural cycles ensure that the grapes will provide the ideal raw material for wines of great richness and complexity.
