NEWS FLASH – November 21, 2014 Page In This Edition 12 Induction Ceremony held GhIE represented at WECSI 2014 Peer review meeting on Structural Design 1 8 9 12 INDCUTION CEREMONY FOR NEW MEMBERS HELD The Ghana Institution of Engineers held the 12th Induction Ceremony for New Members on Tuesday November 18, 2014 at the Engineers Centre. One hundred and five out of the one hundred and twenty Seven Inductees were inducted into the Ghana Institution of Engineers as Members by the President of the GhIE, Ing. Magnus L. Quarshie, FGhIE. The Inductees comprised engineers from Civil, Chemical/Mining, Mechanical / Agricultural /Marine and Electrical / Electronic Technical Divisions. The Guest of Honour was Ing. Edwin O. Apatu, FGhIE (PP). The GhIE President Ing. Magnus L. Quarshie and the Immediate Past President of the Ghana Institution of Engineers, Ben R. Aniagyei took turns in addressing the Inductees. The Chairman for the Membership Committee, Ing. Kwabena Bempong presented 115 inductees who had successfully gone through the assessment process and had been accepted by the Council of the Ghana Institution of Engineers and were presented with certificates accordingly. Five Inductees were awarded for their performance during the Examination. Present at the ceremony were Past Presidents, Council Members, GhIE Members, members of Sister Professional bodies as well as Guests of the inductees and Press Men. Magnus L. Quarshie, Ing. Kwaku Boampong, President Elect and and Ing. George K.A. Essandoh, Executive Secretary The Conference, which had as its theme, “Development of Sustainable Infrastructure in Africa”, was held in Abuja on November 2 – 7, 2014. Highlights of events were as follows,Technical Sessions, Exhibition, Technical Tours, NSE Annual General Meeting Elections and 2nd General Assembly of FAEO The 2nd General Assembly of FAEO concluded with a change of leadership mantle from Engr. Dr. Martin van Veelen to Engr. Mustafa Shehu as President. Engr. Julius M. Riungu of Kenya became the President-Elect. Ghana’s term of the Presidency of WAFEO also came to an end. However, the Assembly extended that term for another two years and endorsed Ing. Magnus L. Quarshie to assume that office. A section of delegates at the WECSI 2014 PEER REVIEW MEETING ON STRUCTURAL DESIGN FOR PROPOSED HOTEL AUSTRIA FOR PROPERTY AND HOUSING LTD The Accra Metropolitan Authority (AMA) contacted the Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE) to peer review a structural design, which has been submitted for permit approval. The project, which is a proposed Hotel, is expected to be 13-storeys with one level basement to be located at Osu, Accra. The GhIE constituted a Panel to handle this request. The Panel members were professional engineers, mostly Structural Engineers and others who matter for such design implementation. In attendance was the design Architect (Orthner & Othner). The presenter was Ing. Francis Bonzoe, The total time proposed for the review was one month. Gathering of information was expected to take one week after the first sitting. The deadline date was to finalize the presentation in the presence of the design Architect. The Meeting was held on November 10, 2014.
