SEMINAR ON MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS FOR PROFESSIONALS (FOUNDATION OF
MANAGEMENT) HELD
The Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE) in line with its policy to intensified its efforts to get its
members and allied professionals to continually update their professional knowledge, series of seminars
are held during the year to enable professionals to consciously update their professional knowledge and
improve upon their professional competence.
A Seminar on Management and Leadership Skills for Professionals (Foundation Of Management) was
held on May 28 – 29, 2014 at the Engineers Centre.
The resource persons were Mr. N. S. K. Appiah and Mr. E. Dugbenoo.
Participants sharpened and deepened their knowledge in, Effective Communication, Strategic/General
Management, Decision Making/Making Creative decisions, Oral, Written etc and Ethics & Organizational
politics.
Topics treated included, Effective Decision Making, The Management Process, Improving
communication Skills, Effective Time Management, Ethics and Organizational Politics, Managing
Organizational Change and Conflict.
Participants earned 12CPD points for attending the Seminar.
The Seminar attracted twenty two (22) participants.

VISIT TO THE WIFE AND CHILDREN OF THE LATE Ing. NANA YAW ATAKORA GYANE I
A ten (10) member delegation led by Ing. J. V. Duncan-Williams (Past President) visited the wife and
children of the late Ing. Nana Yaw Gyane at Tema Community six on Thursday May 29, 2014
The delegation included Ing. J. V. Duncan Williams (Past President), Ing. Ato Wright (Past President) Ing.
Albert A. Ogyiri(Past President), Ing. Ben R Aniagyei (IPP) Ing. Isaac Asempa (former Greater Accra
Regional Chair), Ing. Mrs. Carlien Bou-Chedid, Vice President, Ing. Seth Adjei, Ing. Maybel Amoako Atta
and Ing. Edwin Opare the Greater Accra Regional Chair.
The delegation was welcomed by Mrs. Doris Gyane, the widow and one of her daughters.
Condolences and tributes were paid to the late Ing. Nana Yaw Gyane by members of the delegation.

family gathering at his residence Hse. No RP/6/16 Community six Tema, Behind Empat Caiquo Hospital
Tribute
The family members indicated that the brochures for the funeral ceremony had already been printed
and that they will confirm whether tribute from the Ghana Institution of Engineers to Ing. Nana Yaw
Gyane could be read at the funeral ceremony.
Donation of Water
The delegation on behalf of the Institution donated 10 cartons of bottled water to the bereaved family.
Further donation will be made during the funeral ceremony
Signing of Book of Condolence
Ing. Ben R. Aniagyei, Immediate Past President singed the book of condolence on behalf of the Ghana
Institution of Engineers.

A eight (8) member delegation led by Ing. J. V. Duncan-Williams (Past President) paid a second visited to
the family, wife and children of the late Ing. P. V. Obeng at Tema Community 2 on Thursday May 29,
2014.
The delegation included Ing. J. V. Duncan Williams (Past President), Ing. Ato Wright (Past President) Ing.
Ben R Aniagyei (IPP) Ing. Isaac Asempa (former Greater Accra Regional Chair), Ing. Mrs. Carlien BouChedid, Vice President, Ing. Seth Adjei, Ing. Maybel Amoako Atta and Ing. Edwin Opare the Greater
Accra Regional Chair.
Funeral Arrangement
The delegation was informed that because of the raining season and the impending world cup in Brazil,
the funeral will be put on hold till after the aforementioned events.
The Government has also indicated that the late Ing. P. V. Obeng will be accorded a state Burial.
Tribute
Member recalled their encounters with the late Ing. P. V. Obeng whiles paying tribute to his
contributions to engineering and Ghana as a whole.

Ing. JOSEPH KENNETH. BUCKSON RETIRES.
Ing Joseph K. Buckson the Executive Secretary of the Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE) has retired.
He retired on Friday May 30, 2014 after reaching the mandatory age of sixty (60) years.
Ing. Joseph K. Buckson joined the institution in 2002 as the Director of Operations till he was appointed
as the Ag. Executive secretary in May, 2010 and later confirmed as the substantive Executive Secretary.
Ing. Buckson who is also Fellow of the GhIE worked with the Institution for twelve (12) years.
Notable achievements during his tenure as the Executive Secretary included the Passing of the
Engineering Council Act into Law, the successful hosting of two (2) Engineering Week celebration
outside Accra, i.e. Kumasi and Takoradi and the projection of the Image of the institution globally.
Ing. J. K. Buckson was a product of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi
and the Southampton Solent University in the United Kingdom.
Graduating over three decades ago, Ing. Buckson worked as a Mechanical Engineer for 10 years in the
production industry namely, Tata Brewery Limited (now a group member of Guinness Ghana Breweries
Limited), and Accra Brewery Limited. He was a deputy chief Engineer at Cross River Breweries Limited in
Nigeria.

He worked with Auto companies such as UTC Motors, Nordic Motors and PHC motors, working with the
latter for 12 years as Director of Sales and Services.
At a luncheon for members of staff of the GhIE on Monday June 2, 2014, Ing. Joseph K. Buckson thanked
the staff members for assisting him to perform his duties as the Executive Secretary and advised that
they continue to serve the Institution as they have always done.
The Acting Executive Secretary, Ing. Dr. Desmond O. Aryee-Boi on behalf of the staff presented a plaque
to Ing. Joseph K. Buckson for his dedicated service to the Ghana Institution of Engineers.
