Illinois Public Health Association Conference Overview The conference provides approximately 300 health care professionals throughout Illinois with current and accurate information on important infectious disease topics for performing essential services directly related to, or impacted by, infection control issues, health and medical education efforts and public health practices. Topics focused on will include Immunization, Communicable Diseases and Tuberculosis. This activity is co-provided with Oakton Community College and the Illinois Public Health Association. Conference Purpose To enable the learner to provide essential services related to disease prevention and control. Target Audience The content of this multidisciplinary program is designed for professionals who work to meet the demands of disease prevention and control. The content is especially relevant to those in the following fields: public health personnel, school, college and university health services, infection preventionists and epidemiologists, public and private sector physicians and staff and health educators. Objectives By attending this conference, participants will be able to: • Obtain new information on improvements in diagnosis, treatment, prevention and management of numerous communicable diseases; • Review current understanding of important immunization topics, including vaccine issues; • Acquire knowledge of infectious disease interventions from experts in the disciplines of vaccine preventable disease, communicable disease and tuberculosis; • Gain an understanding of the epidemiology and important issues relating to a variety of communicable diseases affecting public and private health professionals; and • Recognize and respond to emerging infectious diseases. 2014 Illinois Immunization and Communicable Disease Conference • June 25-26, 2014 • www.ipha.com Continuing Education (CE) Credit Registered Nurses This activity has been submitted to WNA CEAP for approval to award contact hours. Wisconsin Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) Upon completion of the conference program, seven (7) CEUs will be awarded by the Illinois Public Health Association (IPHA). IPHA is a designated provider of continuing education contact hours in health education by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing Inc. This program is a designated event for the CHES to receive up to 12.5 Category I CEUs in health education. Other Professionals One universal training hour (UTH) from Oakton Community College is equal to one 60 minute clock hour. CEUs will be awarded upon completion of the conference program. Licensed Environmental Health Practitioners (LEHP) Upon completion of the conference program, CEUs will be awarded. There will be a $10 processing fee for each certificate request. Continuing education certificates will be mailed to the address on the registration form. Certificates will be mailed within 90 days following completion of the conference. Also discussed will be the populations in which TB and hepatitis C overlap and the basic treatment regimen for hepatitis C. 3:45 p.m. – 4 p.m. Break 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. Breakout Sessions Them’s The Rules, Baby! • Carol Gibson Finley This session will identify changes to immunization requirements for children attending daycare, preschool and grade school for 2014-2014 and 2015-2016 school years, explaining the need for and detailing the vaccinations required. This session will also discuss the occurrence of vaccinepreventable disease outbreaks and increasing disease incidence that prompted these rule changes. Understanding Legionellosis • Stephen J. Sokalski, DO, FACOI, FSHEA This session will discuss important facts of Legionellosis identified by the Centers for Disease Control. The discussion will include the unique microbiologic characteristics of Legionalla organisms and a review of recent Legionella outbreaks. Why are Coverage Levels So Low? • Julie Morita, MD This session will discuss current HPV vaccine coverage levels among adolescents in Illinois, changes in HPV related disease since the HPV vaccine was licensed and recommended and strategies implemented to improve first and third does HPV vaccine coverage levels. Tick-Borne Disease: Illinois • Jeff Nelson, M.D. • Matthew Schau, Ph.D. • Drew Rholl, Ph.D. This session will explain the common diseases ticks can transmit and survey methods being used in the Chicago region to inform the community of risk. Also common ticks found in Illinois will be identified. Detection of Rifampin-resistant Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Complex (MTBC) Infections • John Nawrocki, Ph.D. This session will help attendees understand rapid molecular-based assays that are used to detect rifampin resistant MTBC in sputum, culture based gold standard assays that are used to confirm MTBC infection, and culture based gold standard assays that are used to confirm drug-resistant MTBC infection. 11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Break and Exhibits 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Breakout Sessions Laboratory Testing of Vaccine Preventable Diseases • Dawn Nims, M.P.H. • John Nawrocki, Ph.D. This session will discuss the CDC Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologist (CSTE) case definition of select vaccine preventable diseases and what forms of laboratory diagnostic tests are accepted to confirm diagnosis. Also discussed will be the clinical symptoms and when testing is warranted at the IDPH laboratory versus a private, commercial laboratory, specimen collection guidelines, and the difference in molecular-based versus gold standard tests. The Ticks and Musquiters are Verry Troublesome: Disease and History • Linn David Haramis, BS MS Ph.D. This session will discuss the impact of disease on history and how disease has controlled the course of human history far more than has been realized or has been given credit by many.
