Thursday: Applying Modern Firefighting Tactics
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
We are hopefully all aware of the ground-breaking tests that NIST and UL
have been conducting on Modern Fire Behavior over the last few years. An incredible amount of information has come out of the tests, but what does that mean on the
fireground?
Chief Healy has been one of the people at the forefront of this research, and
has overseen the policy, strategy, and tactics changes for the FDNY. He will be here
to teach us how to apply the new info on our modern fireground based on his personal experiences and those of other departments that have been involved. After
this class, you will be armed with the knowledge of how to implement changes in
your own department based on new scientific facts rather than a couple hundred
years of “tradition”.
The presentation will focus on using the new science in fireground decisionmaking, controlling ventilation flow paths, application of hose streams from outside
the structure, and other changes that have come from the studies. This should be a
“DON’T MISS” class for your department policy-makers!!!
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Deputy Chief George K. Healy is a 23
year veteran of the FDNY presently assigned to Division 11
Brooklyn NY. He served as the Operations section chief for both
of the Governor’s Island burns, testing alternate strategies for
combating wind driven fires in 2008 and conducting ventilation
and suppression exercises in 2012. He serves on the Technical
Review Panel for Underwriters Laboratory’s Assistance to Firefighters grant program studying horizontal ventilation and vertical
ventilation. He has been a lecturer at many conferences, including
the FDNY High Rise Symposium, Chicago High Rise Symposium,
UK Fire College Symposium, West Midlands UK seminar, FDIC, and multiple other national and international conferences. He is a Fire Service Instructor I, Nassau Fire Academy
Instructor, Illinois Institute Instructor, Instructor for the Battalion Chief Command Course
and Deputy Chief Development Course and Chiefs Education day for the FDNY.

OLS Kentucky does not have a host hotel or any special rate arrangements, but there
are many fine hotels in the area to choose from. We suggest you contact the hotel of
your choice and ask if they have a special government rate available.
Friday AM: Modern Leaders & People Skills
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: This presentation will consist of 3 one-hour programs:
Creating People Skills: A Generational Look: This lecture centers on how we can be more
effective in using our people skills in all social settings – both professionally and personally. It
is critical to better understand ourselves and some of the keys we must pursue to unlock the
greatness we have inside ourselves. People skills may seem common sense, but common
sense just isn’t so common anymore.
Emotional & Social Intelligence - Hillbilly Heaven: This lecture revolves around what the
current research has to say about emotional and social intelligence – the keys to human interaction. This is a must lecture for anyone that has to deal with others in a cooperative and collaborative environment and want to truly be more effective in our day-to-day communications.
People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
Building The Leader Inside of You: This lecture is one that is built on providing participants with a research based and practical look at leadership. Together, we will explore how
leaders face personal and professional trials and tribulations and find the courage to rise above
the challenge and chart a winning course. Leaders do not inflict pain – they bear it.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Chris Nollette has over thirty years of involvement in
emergency medical services education and professional experience in all-risk public
safety career fields, including: Air Medical, SWAT and special technical rescue. He
has a Doctorate degree in Education from the University of Houston. He has a passionate teaching style that allows the delivery of important points and objectives to a
variety of learning styles while establishing and maintaining an open two-way teaching
relationship with the students. He is a lifelong learner committed to lifelong teaching and mentoring. He
uses enthusiastic and dynamic teaching as a means of creating and nurturing a lifelong passion for EMS.
Friday PM: “Saving Those Who Save Others”
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: This presentation involves a careful examination of firefighter suicides within the fire service. Emphasis is placed on the educational role FBHA plays nationally
through the use of data and statistics collected by FBHA. Presentation will consist of understanding emotional and physical stressors, signs & symptoms, suicide events, communication skills, resources both internal and external and group discussion.
Retirement issues will finish the workshop. The recommendations for firefighters and fire departments on how to become proactive for those members approaching retirement.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: In 2011, Jeff Dill founded Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance
(FBHA). This organization is dedicated to educating firefighters on prevention/awareness
of firefighters from taking their lives. He travels the country holding workshops to educate
firefighters about behavioral health awareness and suicide prevention. FBHA is the only
known organization that collects data on FF suicides across the US as well as globally.
He holds a Masters Degree in Counseling, is a Licensed Professional Counselor, and is
currently a Captain at Palatine Rural Fire Protection District in Inverness, Illinois. He is a
member of the American Counseling Association, Illinois Counseling Association, Illinois Mental Health
Counselors Association, Illinois Fire Chiefs Association, former member of the International Association of
Fire Chiefs, Illinois Professional Firefighter’s Association, and the IAFF.
