Library Services Westlaw International Westlaw International is a collection of databases providing access to primary and secondary legal materials from the US, Canada, European Union, United Kingdom, Hong Kong and other international jurisdictions. It includes full text to case law, legislation, law journals, reviews, treaties, reference materials and international newspapers. EU cases and legislation is best found under the EU tab in Westlaw UK not in Westlaw International. The library does not have access to all content in Westlaw International. If you select a database which is not part of our subscription the following message will appear after you submit your search: ‘database is not authorized under your subscription agreement’ Connecting to Westlaw International Login to Westlaw UK which is available from the Electronic Library homepage: http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/lea/elibrary. Click on the link “Services” and then “Westlaw International” from the blue toolbar at the top of the screen. You will be directed to the International Directory page. From this page, you can click on the link most relevant to your search to enable you to select a database of your choice. Choosing the most relevant tab for your search The other tabs (Law School, World Journals, WLI Academic, Westlaw Australia, Law Source and International Law) contain pre-selected databases covering a particular jurisdiction or type of resources and can be an easier way to start searching Westlaw International. Law School gathers resources on US Law, World Journals contains a selection of journals from different jurisdictions, Westlaw Australia covers Australian legal materials, LawSource covers Canadian legal materials and International Law is a selection of a range of resources from different jurisdictions. Apart from the International Directory page (which does not contain a list of pre-selected databases), all tabs can be searched in a similar way. 1 Searching For example, clicking on the International Law tab will open the page shown below: Westlaw provides two search methods shown above the search box above: Terms & Connectors and Natural Language. A natural language search allows you to enter your search as free text, a Terms & Connectors search requires connectors such as AND and OR. Clicking on the Search Tips tab above the search box opens a help page on the two types of searches. Searching for Journals Clicking on World Journals opens the page shown below: 2 Select “Combined World Journals and Law Reviews” in the World Journals and Law Reviews box to search journals from different jurisdictions in one search. Otherwise select another journal or group of journals from a different box. Enter your search terms. Results The Results List tab shows hits with keywords in context The Related Info tab shows history & citing reference The Terms arrows jump through keywords in the document eg.environment The Doc Arrows jump to next document Doc 1 of 100 The Locate in Results link allows you to search within results The Edit Search link allows you to add terms or create a new search The Research Trail link at the top right hand corner shows your search history for this session You can print/save/email the search results by clicking on one of the icons located at the top right hand corner of the result document Updated July 14 NT 3
