Welcome!
Welcome to the latest edition of our branch newsletter. We’ll update you on recent
fundraising activities and also share details of upcoming events and other news from the
committee. Lots of updates for you this time – Remember we’re keen to keep in touch with
branch members and other interested parties, so if you have any ideas or questions for the
committee, please get in touch via the contact details set out below.
Ganton Remembers 1914 – 1918
In July, we were delighted to be invited to take part in First World War commemorations at
Ganton School who put on a show of song, dance and drama which charted the events
leading up to the beginning of the War and the significant events during the four years of
conflict. The event was well supported by local Councillors, The Lord Mayor of Hull as well
as Legion members and Standard Bearers from around East Yorkshire. The commemoration
ended with a service of remembrance at the grave of Corporal Jack Foster of The East
Yorkshire Regiment who died on 8 November 1918.
Fundraising Fashion Show
On 6th August the branch held a fashion show at M & Co in Beverley. Through ticket sales,
a raffle and a cake sale we raised £216.00, so a big thank you to everyone who attended, as
well as to our organisers (and models!)…
Lights Out Service
To mark the centenary of the moment the First World War broke out, members of the branch
supported the Royal British Legion’s nationwide ‘Lights Out’ campaign on 4th August, which
saw homes, businesses and public buildings extinguishing their lights for an hour. Thank
you to the cadets of the Training Ship Iron Duke, who kindly invited us to their very moving
ceremony.

First World War Commemoration
First World War Commemoration - St Peter’s Church Anlaby
On Saturday, 6th September, branch members from Willerby, Kirk Ella, Anlaby & Hessle
were joined by cadets from the Training Ship Iron Duke, at a service to commemorate the
First World War at St Peter’s Church in Anlaby. This service was also marked the
dedication of the new Willerby, Kirk Ella & Anlaby branch Standard, which was paraded
alongside those of the Hessle sub branch and the TS Iron Duke. Thank you to everyone
who attended and also to those who were involved in organising this well attended service.
The congregation also heard the story of John Samuel Holmes of Anlaby, who was killed in
1917 at the battle of Ypres and whose name is recorded on the Menin Gate. On Monday 15
September, branch committee members, Liz and Tim Spivey, laid a wreath in Mr Holmes’
memory at the Menin Gate evening ceremony.

Deputy Standard Bearer Training
Willerby, Kirk Ella & Anlaby committee member, Heather Roe, recently underwent training to
become the branch’s deputy standard bearer. Heather kindly provided the below report:
“At the Branch AGM last year I was elected Deputy Standard Bearer (untrained). The County
Youth Officer, John Courtley contacted me in May to arrange training, however, due to an
eye operation the week before, I was unable to start Ceremonial training until the middle of
August.
We met in All Saint’s Parish Hall, Hessle in the rear car park which was ideal, and the
training sessions lasted for an hour starting with the basics of carrying the Standard together
with the commands. After the 4th training session the County Youth Officer informed me
that I was ‘Parade Ready’ and, as a result, I will be able to deputise for Stuart, our Branch
Standard Bearer as and when needed ensuring the Branch is represented at the various
events when Branch Standards are asked to be in attendance.
The one-to-one training I have received has been beneficial and John travelling from York
each week to train me has been appreciated. My thanks go to Liz Spivey, Branch Secretary
for arranging the use of the Parish Hall Car Park for the training purposes.”
