NORMANDY 70 YEARS ON
WEEK ST MARY VETERAN
STEPHEN GARRARD RETURNS
D-Day - a veteran’s story
03 June 2014
Peter Francis, from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission spoke to D-Day
veteran Stephen Garrard whilst on the ferry to Normandy for the D-Day 70
commemorations.
"It's my first time back but I'm really looking forward to it", Stephen Garrard told
me on a packed ferry across to Caen. One of four veterans on the boat, our
conversation is interrupted at regular intervals as other passengers shake
Stephen's hand or ask to have their photo taken with him. He takes it all in good
and modest humour - a salute every now and again for younger inquisitors.
"Before the war, I worked at Woolworths but when war was declared I tried to join
the Navy. I passed all the tests but failed the medical on account of my teeth.
Apparently, I didn't have enough!" We both laugh. "So I joined the Army instead!"
After months of working in logistics, Stephen's regular requests for a formal
transfer to operations were finally answered and he was sent for training near
Salisbury. He volunteered for the Glider Pilot programme and spent time between
formal combat training and the basics of learning to fly.

"We started in Tiger Moths before moving onto gliders - which gradually got
bigger and heavier", Stephen tells me. "All the time we were also training for
combat - there are no passengers in the Airborne!"
Stephen landed in the second wave on D-Day and fought throughout the
campaign. He later fought at Arnhem where his co-pilot was killed. He was
wounded and captured. After nine months in captivity, including a forced march
from Poland to Germany, Stephen finally returned home.
Seventy years ago, while holding Pegasus Bridge, Stephen turned 22. On
Saturday, he will mark his 92nd birthday at Ranville on a private visit to the CWGC
cemetery there.
"I'm so grateful for the work that the Commission does. You look after my
comrades so well." Stephen tells me. Surely there can be no higher praise

Week St Mary WI - June Meeting
In June we met for a brief meeting in the afternoon, before
going to The Boscastle Farm Shop and Restaurant for
afternoon tea.
Next year is the Centenary of the start of the WI, and
celebrations are being planned throughout the country.
The Week St Mary WI is joining forces with the Bude WI to
plan our own local celebrations - so watch this space!
The afternoon tea at the Farm Shop was excellent, and much
enjoyed. We should have gone for a walk, and enjoyed the
beautiful views, but were too full of sandwiches, homemade
cake, and enormous jam and cream scones.
Next month is our annual garden party. Our members are
excellent cake bakers, and at this rate we will need to start a
slimming club! You are welcome to join us; for more details
phone Sue Dyer (341083) or Judy Hepper (341500).
WSM BABY AND TODDLER GROUP
The Coffee Pot Club
The Coffee Pot Club meets every Tuesday
10am – 12noon
In the Parish Hall, Week St Mary.
Everybody is welcome with babies, toddlers and children for fun, toys,
singing and craft sessions.
We also provide a healthy snack and hot/cold drinks for children and
adults.
We provide a friendly environment for mums, dads, carers and
grandparents, to meet up and give the children a chance to play and
interact with each other, which allows the adults to have a break and a
chat over a coffee!
We meet throughout the year including school holidays when school age
siblings are welcome too and have occasional outings as a group.
We’d love you to come and join us.

May I draw attention to the fact that the Parish Hall is available for hire

WEEK ST MARY PARISH COUNCIL
Letter to the Editor
The Parish Council meeting took place on Thursday 12th 2014 at
7.30pm under the chairmanship of Mr J Ward with six Councillors
and the Clerk. C Cllr N Chopak was in attendance, no other
members of the public were present.
The following matters were discussed:
DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST were noted and no requests for
dispensations were received.
MATTERS ARISING – The exact location of the holding tanks at
Ashbury Grove remains in question and the Clerk will contact
Pearce Construction for information. A Holsworthy Hamlets
councillor is co-ordinating a community response relating to the
threat of bed closures in Holsworthy Hospital. As a result of the
news that Devon Healthcare are planning to close wards
throughout the county, the Clerk will write to oppose the cuts. No
response received from the Police Commissioner about plans to
reduce police stations and the long time ‘on-hold’ when calling the
non-emergency telephone number 101. The Clerk will write to the
Police Chief Constable, the MP and the Home Office expressing
deep concern about news that police officers from Devon and
Cornwall will be seconded for neutral aid duties and planned
further cuts to police officers.

I would like to record my appreciation for the help that was so
willingly given by so many last week when I asked for a little
assistance towards maintaining the churchyard until our regular
arrangements could resume. The amount of effort put in by so
many was truly humbling and although I think I know who they all
were, no-one that had not been particularly asked, announced their
intention to help so I am unwilling to list names here in case I miss
some of those.

All I can say is THANK YOU everyone.
We are now able to get back on track with regular cutting - which
is still done by a very willing volunteer - weather and having a
private life, permitting. I would however, like also to say to all
those who constantly worry about the length of the grass (and the
appearance of beautiful flowers amongst it for the first time in 20 or
more years) that the church takes its responsibility to maintain its
churchyard very seriously - in fact of course it is also a massive
expense which is paid by voluntary contributions organised by the
Friends group. (Please see Sue Dyer if you would like to
contribute)
We strive to keep the grass under control but any concerns you
have should be addressed to the churchwardens direct who will be
pleased to reassure you that the work WILL BE DONE when
possible. Our grass cutting warden will also be very happy if
anyone wants to help or just quietly turn up and do some of the
fiddly bits to help him on his way. The job takes a minimum of
three days each month for one man and you can see that just a
fortnight's bad weather and a few days away from home makes this
task even greater. In reply to those who ask why we do not get a
contract grass cutter in - the last quote we had was two years ago
for £450 a cut. Enough said I think.
Sincerely
Lesley Booker (Churchwarden)
