Newsletter for the families of
Apr/May 2014 Volume 7, Issue 5
Each spring, students in grades 2 through 11 usually take a set of state tests
to measure perfor¬mance known as the California State Tests (CST’s). Due
to the Common Core shifts students will not be tested using the CST’s this
year, except students in grades 5 and 11 will be tested in Science only on
Thursday April 10th .
This is a very exciting opportunity for your child and our school. As you
may already know, we, along with thousands of schools across California,
are participating in a field test of a modern assessment system designed to
help shape teaching and learning in the classroom. Known as the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress – or CASPP – these
computer-based tests replace the STAR program.
These tests are aligned to the Common Core State Standards for English and
math, which California adopted in 2010 to describe what knowledge and
skills students need to be well prepared for college and careers, no matter
where they come from or where they live.

Part of the goal of the field test this year is to determine how well individual
questions allow students to demonstrate what they know and still need to
learn. We are also taking this opportunity to see how well our technical capabilities meet the demands of computer-based assessments and to see what
resources our teachers and school may yet need.
Full color copies are available for
download at the WCSAT website:
http://wcs.ceres.k12.ca.us/WCSAT
Finally and importantly, this year also gives your student an opportunity to
try out the new system without consequences. All of this combined means
that we will not be capturing scores this year. Instead, we will use what we
learn from this field test to help ensure a successful full launch of the system
in the 2014-15 school year.

Our next step in that transition is to administer the field test to students in
grades 3-8 from April 7th through May 2nd. If you want to see what types
of questions students will be asked or how the test will be presented, there is
a practice test available online at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/practicetest.

Fine Arts Night
was another huge success here at
Whitmore Charter! On March 25th
over 400 works of art, both digital and
studio art, hung in our cafeteria turned
art gallery. The works were stunning
and the visitors couldn’t have been
more impressed or more proud of all
the Whitmore artists. We were overwhelmed with the donations of fancy
desserts and drinks. Thank you all for
showing your support to the program.
The art department brought in just
about $1,500 for the evening which
funds all the supplies needed for next
school year’s classes. Thank you all
for your support!
All artwork will be returned to students
in portfolios on May, 23rd. Please be
on the lookout for the portfolio full of
work from the year.
Don’t forget to check out your child’s
work and others at www.artsonia.com/

Literacy Night
Provided by Ms. Kerr, 1st grade teacher
Another family filled fun evening celebrating literacy on
February 26th! Whitmore families and students enjoyed many activities centered around this year’s theme,
Favorite Authors. Activities were all hands-on crafts
and snacks for everyone to enjoy. Mr. Viss conducted
an informational Common Core in-service for parents.
Thank you to everyone who was able to volunteer their
time! It takes all of us working together and this night
was another WONDERFUL WHITMORE event!

Whitmore Art on Display
Mrs. Lloyd was able to spend a few days
in San Diego last week sharing and collaborating with other art teachers across
the nation about the incredible art program
at Whitmore. She presented to a packed
room full of teachers about all the digital
art accomplishments of our kindergarten
through middle school artists. There was
great interest in the way Whitmore runs the
digital classes. Mrs. Lloyd was even able
to finally meet a professor from Tennessee
who is writing an art education text book
in which WCSAT artist’s works will be
featured! Whitmore is going to be famous!
