Leakage with respect to energy use is a problem.
Leakage, like the proverbial dripping faucet, is a
direct loss of energy and therefore, a predictable
loss of energy, resulting in increased operating costs
through higher fan power and conditioning costs.
While some air change based on human occupation
is mandated and all building shells have leakage
to some degree, KyotoCooling® by Air Enterprise
guarantees an industry-leading leakage rate on
air handlers of less than 0.5 percent of air volume
at 15 inches of static pressure for the life of the
equipment.
Leakage is more complex in the context of a
data center, where it is important to maintain the
conditioned space. That requires controlling the

inside or outside the whitespace. Unit is fully environmentally hardened for roof or grade deployment.
quality of the air in terms of cleanliness, humidity and
temperature, along with the rate of change as defined by the
industry.
It is important to maintain filtration, minimize leakage
and control humidity and temperature to maximize the
life of information technology equipment. Intel famously
demonstrated a 63 percent increase in failure rate using
outside air in just more than 10 months across control
groups in a New Mexico study. Sub 3μ (micron) particulates
and a lack of humidity control are significant causes of
early electronics failure due to deliquescent condensation
effects.
Series100 Outperforms
Traditional CRAC units in:
•
Leakage affects energy, and in the context of mission
critical cooling, it has a related impact. KyotoCooling
has inherent control over both aspects of design.
KyotoCooling® rigorously maintains the conditioned space
through an indirect air-to-air cooling system that performs
conductive heat transfer without bringing in outside air.
We also filter 100 percent airflow, twice, believing that 100
percent filtration and ultralow leakage are appropriate
for mission-critical design in situations in which the core
mission of the design is to avoid information technology
failure.
3
Energy Efficiency Second to None
KyotoCooling® Raises the bar on energy efficiency
with the widest range of economization hours for any
mission critical cooling system at any temperature. The
KyotoCooling® Series100 far exceeds ASHRAE 90.1 –
the industry standard for energy efficiency in cooling
equipment. By using KyotoCooling®, you can ensure
that your data center well surpasses industry standards
to position your organization as an industry-leader in
environmentally friendly and cost-effective cooling.
US PATENT 7,753,766 B2
The KyotoCooling® Wheel is a single thermal transfer
process. As such it suffers none of the inefficiencies
of multiple coil/fan transfers such as in other
economization systems including pumped refrigerant.
Losses in those systems are additive. By utilizing a
single medium and avoiding liquid to substrate to air
transfer we minimize approach and maximize hours
achieving the highest possible transfer efficiency and
effectiveness. This nets to more hours of economization
and more real dollars saved annually.
Lowest Total Cost of Ownership
When total site cost is analyzed, KyotoCooling® consistently yields net overall project cost reduction. Building
envelopes shrink, build costs are reduced, capital is conserved and operating costs are lowered. This requires
analysis – not a superficial cost per ton comparison but a detailed review. Every time this has been done, we
have delivered significantly lower total cost of ownership.
For 92 percent of the land surface of the planet, the waterless operation of KyotoCooling® is lower than that
of alternative designs. We achieve better than 90 percent effectiveness in economization without resorting
to elevated supply temperatures or unreasonable return temperature assumptions. This results in significant
operational savings over the lifecycle; future proofing the data center and decision making for large capital
builds.
Smarter Cooling(TM)
KyotoCooling® — A simple, elegant, integrated design, improved through
continuous product advancement and millions of operating hours. Simplicity
eliminates operational mistakes. Simple is good, and we think it’s smart.
•
Smart Energy: Lowest PUE in the industry saving 100s of millions of KWh
of energy per data center.
•
Smart Water: Waterless with lowest WUE, saving 10s of millions of
gallons of water per KyotoCooling® unit installed.
•
Smart Carbon: Lowest CUE, equivalent to 10s of thousands of fewer cars
on the road per KyotoCooling® unit installed.
•
Smart Business: Why should a cooling system not have a strong
business case? We bring value in function, environmental impact,
capital cost and operating cost. We affect all four of these core values in
significantly positive ways.
•
Smart Manufacturing: We make equipment that lasts. All-aluminum
construction means a life expectancy of 40 years or longer for panel
systems and 25-plus years for our wheels. We guarantee a low leakage
rate for the life of the unit. Continuous welded sub bases, best-in-class
components, lowest MTBF and fastest MTTR are standard attributes.
That’s just smart.
•
Smart Execution: With Air Enterprises’ 50 years of high-end custom air
hander manufacturing experience, we can deliver and install to the most
aggressive lead-time requirements.
•
Smart Support: We have you covered with 24/7 monitoring, help-desk
and escalation management. We chart, trend and monitor system health
using secure VPN connections to provide immediate support to onsite
staff.
•
Smart Investment: We are a re-deployable, long-term capital asset.
We qualify for energy-related grants, loans and offsets. We keep your
capital investment safe by supporting tomorrow’s IT and temperature
requirements. That’s smart.
•
Trouble Free Maintenance: We design for life. KyotoCooling units are
designed for long life and with operations and maintenance in mind.
“Simplicity
is the ultimate
sophistication.”
Leonardo da Vinci
KyotoCooling® delivers best in class WUE
and PCUE performance measurements.
Low maintenance for KyotoCooling® has been relentlessly engineered through smart system design by using
long life filters, power monitoring, direct drive motors, no single point of failure controls and self adaptive

AC motors are designed to operate at a certain point on their performance curve, which
coincides with their peak efficiency. Either side of this operating point, the efficiency
can drop off considerably. EC motors on the other hand have an almost flat efficiency
curve, which varies relatively little across the speed range, a range which is not limited by
synchronous speeds or as susceptible to voltage fluctuations as an AC motor. This makes
the EC fan much more flexible in terms of being able to use the same product to match the
performance requirements of different applications while still benefitting from increased
efficiency.
The KyotoCooling® Series100 incorporates MicroChannel Coils
Microchannel Coils are very efficient heat exchangers, in part, due to the very high ratio
of primary surface (direct cooling via refrigerant and tubes) versus secondary surface
(fins) when compared to round tube plate fin (RTPF) coils. In traditional RPTF coils, the
refrigerant typically flows through a 3/8-in. tube, with direct cooling really only taking
place around the surface of the copper tube (and extending to aluminum fins). As a
result, you essentially have a lot of wasted space —and refrigerant—in the center of the
tube. This surface allows for a more compact coil design and substantial reduction in
refrigerant charge, because there’s less total tube/coil volume required. This adds up to

The KyotoCooling® Series100 incorporates Scroll Compressors.
KyotoCooling® utilizes second-generation variable speed Scroll Compressors that
incorporate patented, reliable and innovative drive coupling for maximum durability.
These compressors have an extended operating range making them suitable for climatic
conditions impossible for pumped refrigerant systems. KyotoCooling® Scroll Compressors
deliver exceptional energy efficiency and turn down control for series use with
KyotoCooling® Wheel applications to optimize and extend shoulder-cooling conditions in
warmer geographies. Combined with Micro channel coils these Gen-2 Scroll Compressors
provide quiet, energy efficient and eco friendly mission critical cooling. By pre-piping and
pre-charging at factory we maintain exact quality control on the unit and a ready to use
capability without site pipe routing, welding, test and charge delays prior to startup.
