You will see many of the old traditions remain as well as the start of many new traditions. We have kept our blue and white uniform but added the new royal blue and khaki option. We want our uniform to be a reflection of the pride we take in our school but we also want our students to have choices. We have added a new “Activity Period” to the day to help our students explore new interests and to add some spirit to each day. Many new events will be added as the year progresses and we encourage our students to participate in them as each one will help unify our school and make us stronger. Our academics remain strong and we have added faculty that will only enhance the education our students receive. Discipline is vital to our school’s respect theme—we want each child to have a positive experience. Therefore, we have hired a full time Dean of Students to work with our students and maintain an atmosphere on our campus that is positive and where learning and maturing are key components of the discipline. ters to help keep you informed but updates can be found on the website homepage and website calendar. I am accessible to both students and families, as are the faculty. We want to partner together to make Pius X the best gift to all! I invite each family to visit our website, www.piusxhs.org, to find information about events and news about our school. We will continue the newslet- WELCOME NEW FACULTY This year Pius X said farewell to a few of our faculty members as they began new chapters in their lives. We said a sad farewell to Mr. Burns, who passed away over the summer. All will be missed but will be forever remembered as leaving their marks on our school and students. We are pleased to welcome several new faculty members to our school family for the 2014-15 academic year. Please join us in welcoming: Kayla Bringengberg—Math Dane DiFebo—Soc. Mr. Disidore will remain as Athletic Director & teacher. PAGE 2 PIUS X JR/SR HIGH SCHOOL NEW THIS YEAR Full Time Music Program For the first time in many years and while many schools are cutting back their arts curriculum, Pius X has increased our commitment in this area and added a full-time music instructor. Mr. Shimkus will give classroom instruction as well as private lessons. The goal is to eventually build our music program to include a band, a choir and offer our students the ability to enhance their skills and love of music. Food Service Changes Enjoying a prepared lunch is offered at many schools but making that userfriendly for families is important at Pius. Through the help of our food service provider, Maschio’s, families can now set-up pre-paid accounts to use in the cafeteria rather than having cash daily. This helps families track their students spending and makes buying lunch much easier. For instructions on setting up your account, visit our website at www.piusxhs.org under the Parent’s Resource Tab. Daily Activity Period We recognized the need to add a wider array of clubs to our school while at the same time eliminating the need for transportation after school. In light of this, we have added a daily activity period to each student’s schedule. Students selected from a list of clubs and faculty has been selected to act as moderators. Clubs will meet twice in every six day cycle so students will be enrolled in three clubs each semester. This new program is unique to our school and we look to build upon it as we move forward. After many long and hot summer practices, the small but mighty Royal squad under the direction of Pius X alum Coach Phil Stambaugh, showed that great things come in small packages! The team delighted those in attendance who traveled from the Bangor area to an offensive show. The final score showed Pius X winning 62-12. For his tremendous effort, Pius quarterback, Tre Jordan, was named the Lehigh Valley Sports Hall of Fame Small School Quarterback of the week. Congratulations to Tre and the entire Pius X team and coaching staff. The next football game is Saturday, September 6th at home versus School of the Future . Kickoff is 1:00PM. The team, under new head coach, Karla Cressman, is young but is quickly learning new styles and techniques that will pay dividends as the season progresses. During each of the first two pool-play games at the tournament the team showed improvement and began to gel as a team. The third game and first of the elimination round saw the Pius X team beat Tamaqua High School and advance to round 2. The next opponent, Blue Mountain High School, was a much more experienced team that has played year-round volleyball, yet the young Royals hung tough in defeat, 2 games to 1. the more experienced team. At Pius X we are fortunate to have 12 dedicated students to assist the school in raising the level of spirit and pride on our campus. Under the leadership of Coaches Andrea Richmond and Kayla Bringenberg, the squad supports our athletic teams at the various events, leads the student body at Pep Rallies, decorates lockers and the locker rooms and rep- resents the Royals in all their activities. This year’s squad captains are Francesca Catino and Zariah Mekile. We are fortunate to have such dedicated and spirited cheerleaders and wish them much success during their fall and winter seasons! Go Royals! www.piusxhs.org ADVANCEMENT NEWS As the school year begins, the Advancement Office receives several phone calls from families asking questions that many of our other families may also need to know. Here are some of the more common questions along with where to find the answer: YES! We realize that there are families looking to help themselves financially and this year have introduced two new ways. You can REFER A STUDENT to Pius X and if they enroll, you will receive a $250 credit to ward your tuition. (See the Admission Tab on website for the form). The second way offered to families this year involves the fundraisers. Each family is required to meet their fundraising obligation annually. If your family has the ability to exceed the required sales of raffle tickets, either Sweepstakes or Gala, the additional amount sold will be applied directly to your tuition. This is a great way to involve family and friends, promote Pius X and reduce tuition. (For more information, contact the Advancement Office.) What is the dress code or what is the school’s policy on discipline? All of these answers can be found on the website, www.piusxhs.org, under the Parent Resource tab—Parent & Student Handbook. How can I know what is going on at Pius X for events and Mass schedules? Visit the website, www.piusxhs.org and view the school calendar. As events are scheduled or any changes made, we add them to the calendar. How can I see how my child is performing in each class? You can always email a faculty member or call and leave a message requesting them to call you. As a parent, you may also view your child’s progress on our MMS system. The link is on our website homepage and instructions for setting up the account can be found on the Parent Resource tab. Are there any ways I can lower my tuition now that financial aid has been finalized? What are other ways to help our school? Be a Pius Volunteer. An email blast will be sent out shortly with areas that the school needs parental involvement. There are many ways to get involved. Please contact the Advancement office for details. Clearances are required. Please return all school forms to the main office including medical forms, handbook notification form and media release. It is important that each student’s file be complete. Thank you! Coming together is a beginning; Keeping together is progress; Working together is Success! Henry Ford STUDENT HAPPENINGS Pius X has many students who have phenomenal achievements both in and outside of the classroom. WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! If you know of a student that is accomplishing great things or pursuing success, please email [email protected], and we will share the great news. Currently, Pius X has two members of our senior class striving to obtain admission to the military academies, Kelli Franza, a member of our girls volleyball and softball teams, and Garrett Irizarry, a member of our football and wrestling teams. Kelli’s goal is to attend the US Coast Guard Academy and Garrett’s goal is the US Naval Academy. To achieve admission, students must possess strong academic and leadership skills, as well as involvement in extra-curricular and community service programs. We wish both Kelli and Garrett much success as they work toward these appointments. Pius X junior, Lindsey Shay, attended RYLA this summer. RYLA is Rotary International’s leadership program for young adults. The West End Rotary Club sponsored Lindsey for the weeklong summer program. Lindsey worked with approximately 80 young leaders at Keystone College in La Plume. At Pius, Lindsey is involved in student government, SADD and basketball. Pictured below is Lindsey along with her parents, Pam & Dave Shay. Congratulations Lindsey! Pius X Jr/Sr High School 580 Third Ave Bangor, PA 18013 610-588-3291 www.piusxhs.org
