Next Newsletter - November 2014 Mangere College Newsletter September 2014 KIA ORA TALOFA LAVA MALO E LELEI KIA ORANA FAKALOFA LAHI ATU NAMASTE CHAO ASSALAAM-WA-ALIKUM and GREETINGS Dear parents, caregivers and friends of Mangere College This newsletter is one of our larger ones in the year as it reflects the breadth of activities that students of the college have been involved in over the course of this term so far. Inside we report in full on the achievements of our winter sports’ teams and of course we are also looking forward to our annual Sports’ Awards evening on Wednesday, September 17. As you can see inside our teams have enjoyed a great deal of success and I wish to thank all staff, family and community coaches, managers and supporters that have given of their time and effort to assist our students to enjoy their sport. We have also just completed our NCEA preliminary exam week and all seniors will now be receiving information on how these went for them. Students should be encouraged to make sure that they are quite clear as to the next steps that they should be taking in each of their subjects to ensure that they will be able to improve further on these results when they come to the externals in November. We were delighted to learn that Counties Manukau District Health Board has selected Mangere College to join their Health Academy scheme and we have held our first information meeting for parents of prospective health pathway students who will make up our first cohort in 2015. Finally our option book for 2015 was distributed at the beginning of last week and all returning students in 2015 will now be making careful decisions about their subject selections to fit in with their career planning. John Heyes. Principal Mangere College Health Science Pathway The first parent meeting for the MC Health Science Academy was held on the 28th August. On behalf of the Science teachers, I would like to express our sincere thanks to the Mangere College families who attended the meeting. Mangere College, in partnership with Counties Manukau District Health Board, is one of three schools selected to offer the new Health Science Academy Pathway to Level 1 NCEA students from 2015. The aim of this Health Science Academy is to develop learning environments that will improve Pasifika students’ achievement in Science in order to pathway them into health careers e.g. Nurse, physiotherapist, Dentist and Doctor etc. This programme highlights the necessity to have Pasifika students in Science, and to have a career in the health sector to meet the needs of Pasifika people in the community. According to the CMDHB there is an increasing Pasifika population with increasing health needs but a shortage of young Pasifika people choosing Health Science careers. The achievement of Maori and Pasifika students is the core to all the work we plan to carry out at Mangere College. The Science Academy programme at Mangere College will provide the foundations for students to have a successful pathway to a successful career in the health sector in the future. Furthermore, we would like your child to further their study in tertiary institutes with Heath Science as a career focus. Students will have brought home the senior subject information booklet to choose their options for 2015. I urge you to encourage your child to choose Health Science as one of their options for next year. In the meantime if you have any questions regarding the Health Science Pathway or any other matters feel free to contact me to further discuss this opportunity. STAND OUT! During the last month, music students have been involved in the Stand Up! Stand Out! Competition run by the Auckland Council. Mangere College entered 4 soloists and 1 group into this competition and of those entered, 3 soloists and our New Breed Choir were successful in making it to the finals which were held at the Vodafone Event Centre, Manukau on 29 August. The biggest heat, of 72 entries, was the Vocal Solo section. Jessica Puaavase and Veronica Tulafasa were successful in making it firstly, to the semi-finals and then on to the finals where there were only 8 Vocal soloists. They were very strong competitors and are extremely talented. Our third soloist on the night was Tearataua Tavioni who as well as being our youngest entrant went on to win the instrumental soloist section on the Drums. Last, but not least were our group finalists, the New Breed Choir. This is the third year in succession, that choir director Ina Hicks has lead our choir to the finals. We would like to acknowledge Ina Hicks for her expertise and commitment to the choir and for giving our students this opportunity.
