EDITOR’S NOTE
As we farewell the 2014 Waratah Women Members season this will be
the final Newsletter for 2014. Throughout the year “Down the
Fairways” has kept members up to date with the monthly programme,
upcoming events, birthdays, sick list, information shared by stories,
and jokes.
“Down the Fairways” has covered Pennant and Grade teams,
Invitation Gala Day, Frith Cup, Charity Day, Championships, and
Waratah Pro-Am. Celebrated our mature members special birthdays,
Glad (90) Corinne (80) Jackie Johnston (belated 80) and of course the
extra special day to celebrate the longevity of membership for our
Patroness Beryl Tobin.
Our President’s Pen and Captain’s Corner reports have been
informative and very much appreciated.
During November we rounded up the year by celebrating Back to
Waratah Day combined with our Xmas Gala Day, and enjoyed our
Presentation Dinner.
Yes it has been a big year so where does one start to say Thank You
for the support that has been given to me again throughout 2014, not
only with submissions to our newsletter but the positive feedback? I
will start with all members who submitted stories, jokes, supplied
information for the Tid-Bits section, the President and Captain for
their reports each month and of course all our lady members. I say a
heartfelt THANK YOU as the Newsletter could not have been as
informative and interesting without your input. I look forward to
continuing in the Editor’s role in 2015 so keep those “Tid-bits” and
postcards on your incredible experiences coming! Loraine

DECEMBER 2014
BACK TO WARATAH–CAKE CUTTING DAY
Combined with
XMAS GALA DAY
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EVENT with a good
turnout of players to enjoy the day. The cake was
cooked and decorated
by our very creative
members
Helen
Donaldson (baking) and
Lesley
Daglish
(decorating).
The
honour of cutting the
cake was given to Joan
Screen, an ex-member
of Waratah. Not only
was our cake cutting a
success but members turned on a show for the day
dressed
in
their
Christmas gear as well
as great golf. It was a
sea of red and green,
very
“Christmassy”,
carts did not miss out
either
and
were
decorated in all their
Christmas glory in keeping with the spirit of the
day.
A good field teed off in great weather, spirits was
high and the mood infectious.
Congratulations to all the winners, and the
committee for catering such a fabulous lunch. A
great day was had by all!

FAIRWAYS
DECEMBER 2014
BERYL TOBIN DAY
The day was held to honour Beryl’s 70th year of membership
of our club and her 55yrs with the NHDLGA. The day
commenced with early morning coffee and scones,
presentation of the “Miss Waratah” sash and crown followed
by a 9:00am shotgun start. The fairways were a buzz of
excitement, anticipation and general all round good vibes.
The game was a 4BBB V Stableford and at completion was
followed by a High Tea. Notable dignitaries on the day were
Local Member of Parliament Pat Conroy, Golf NSW
Representative Sue Fabian, NHDLGA representative Lynn
Wootton, Newcastle District representative John Waanders
and our very own Patron Col Johnston.
Accolades for this truly remarkable lady were not only for the
length of her WGC membership and her years as a committee
member of the NHDLGA but for Beryl’s achievements and
dedication to the game throughout her golfing career.
Beryl’s golfing achievements include 7 Holes in One, A Grade Club Champion 19 times, Club Foursomes
Champion 21 times and played Pennants for 50 years. Beryl set numerous course records, won District
Championships and Champion of Champions events, State and Country titles, and played exhibition matches
at National and International level. To add to all of the above Beryl and her golfing partner, Robyn Watt, won
the WGC 2014 Foursomes championship.
At Newcastle Hunter District Level Beryl has represented Waratah Golf Club for over 55 years holding the
positions of Committee member, Vice President and two five year terms as President.
Not only are her achievements at Waratah Golf Club notable she has also held the A Grade Champion at
Newcastle Golf Club 14 times, won many Foursomes and mixed events.
CONGRATULATIONS BERYL YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION

Postcard
Ian and I have been away for a month up North in
the caravan. We took our time and stayed 3 or 4
nights in some beautiful caravan parks and went as
far as Hervey Bay in Queensland. We played golf at
some great golf courses on our travels. These
included Emerald Downs at Port Macquarie, Teven
Valley near Byron Bay, Pialba at Hervey Bay, and
Chinderah near Kingscliff with Jill and Terry Smythe,
Iluka near Yamba and South West Rocks. We really
enjoyed our trip and playing golf at some really
beautiful golf courses.
