Policy Challenge
•
Revenue from data licensing offsets the tax burden of collecting and
managing the data necessary for municipal government operations
•
Provide more data, which currently generates revenue, for free increases
the municipal tax burden
•
Calgary elected officials and senior administration are committed to a
responsible balance between that which is licensed for revenue and that
which is licensed without cost (both are licensed)

What’s Happening
Open Data Catalogue launched in August 2013
• Currently 100 datasets
• 10000+ downloads per month
• Data is released under an Open Data License that allows data to be
used for any lawful purpose
• Data has been used to support one datathon (by Data for Good) and
one hackathon (by Startup Calgary)
• Currently 22 apps available for Android and IOS that use Calgary Open
Data (source Google Play and Apple App stores) that have been
downloaded more than 750,000 times (source Google Play for Android,
xyo.net for IOS)
