This unique biographical and autogiographical journey centers on John Laurie’s journey as a key proponent for aboriginal rights in the 1940s & 50s. It tells of Ruth Gorman’s tireless work to assist Laurie in mobilizing support for Aboriginal rights to vote without giving up their treaty rights. Former President of Athabasca University & Director of Information Resources University of Calgary President of the International Council for Open and Distance Education Associate Professor, University of Alberta, descendent of the Papachase Cree & was given the Blackfoot name Aipioomahkaa (Long Distance Runner). Dwayne taught at Kainai High School beginning in 1993. This experience and opportunity to learn from the Kainai Elders and community leaders changed his life. Calling on place and story from both Blackfoot and Plains Cree, Dwayne encourages “Canadians to rethink, reframe, and reimagine their relationship with Aboriginal peoples.” Dwayne will be speaking on Elder Teacher Medicine Bosses: Naapi, Wisakecahk, and the ‘Lived’ Curriculum.
