First ever triFUNalon is a hole-in-one
The first inaugural United Way
triFUNalon took place on Friday,
May 23 at Evergreen Golf Centre.
Formerly known as the Corporate
Challenge, a dozen teams of four
battled it out on the Par-3 course,
mini-golf course and the go-kart
track to prove that their team was
the best in the South West.
Congratulations to the team from
YPM on taking back the trophy that
CJOC 94.1 FM took home at last
year’s event! YPM had the highest
overall scores at the end of the
tournament followed closely by
AMA in second place.

In the fundraising spotlight
Support for United Way comes from all across the community
On March 8 Terry Huisman
(left) presented $21,000 to the
United Way’s Jeff McLarty (right)
representing funds raised through
a partnership with the Hurricanes.
At each home game of the
2013-2014 season, United Way
volunteers were there, selling the
game-night program and raffle
tickets on an autographed player
jersey. On hand to help accept
the cheque were Shelby Karas
and Katarina Schnerch (centre left
and centre right)from the U of L’s
Kappa Pi Chi Female Fraternity
whose sisters were some of the
most frequent volunteers at the
games.
Thanks Hurricanes fans and
team for all you do for the
community!
On March 6, Northside
Lethbridge Dodge’s Russell
Gallant (right) presented United
Way’s Jeff McLarty (left) with
$9,100 for community reinvestment.
Each month at Northside
Lethbridge Dodge a local charity
is chosen to receive $100 from
each vehicle sold that month. For
the 28 days in February, United
Way saw the benefit from the sale
of 91 vehicles!
McLarty says that this donation
gives a great boost to United
Way’s Community Fund which is
divided annually among a number
of other local charities.
Thank you Northside Lethbridge
Dodge for supporting the United
Way and the community we serve!

United Way, Canadian Blood Services - Partners for Life
Blood donation another great way to give back to community
Submitted by
Canadian Blood Services
Meet Parker!
Parker was born with a congenital heart defect and started to
lose heart function when he was
six months old. Parker was seven
months old when he had his first
open heart surgery.
By nine months of age, Parker’s
heart was becoming weaker and
he was in complete heart failure.
STARS rushed him from Lethbridge to Edmonton where he
received a pacemaker to regulate
his heart. Shortly after that, he
was placed on a Berlin heart while
waiting for a donor heart.
Finally, when Parker was 15
months old, his family received
the call they had been waiting
for. Parker would receive his new
heart on May 31, 2010.
In 2011, Parker was back in the
hospital due to a bleeding disorder that occurs under the skin’s
surface. Parker received platelet
transfusions as part of his treatment.
“
“
52% of Canadians say they or a
family member have needed blood
or blood products.
The family’s journey does not
end there. In August 2012, Parker
was back in the hospital. He had
become very sick due to an antibody condition that was attaching
to his platelets and destroying his
spleen. During his four months in
hospital his spleen was removed,
he had bleeding in his brain, he
coded and stopped breathing.
Parker battled back and in his
short life Parker, now four, has
received 100-150 blood and blood
products.
It’s in you to give
United Way is proud to be part
of Partners for Life – a life-saving
program for organizations committed to giving blood and saving
lives!
One of the most direct ways to
help our fellow Albertans is by
encouraging people to donate
blood. The need for blood touches all people, regardless of age,
ethnicity, income or hometown.
In fact, 52% of Canadians say
they or a family member have
needed blood or blood products.
The need for blood is ongoing,
and patients that are treated for
such things as cancer, surgery,
and trauma depend on a stable
supply of blood year round.
For the month of June 565 more
donations are needed at the Lethbridge blood donor clinic to keep
up with hospital demand. There
is especially a need for donors on
Friday June 26 and Friday June 13.

2014 Youth Week keeps youth programs low-to-no cost
2014 Youth Week is a partnership between United
Way and six local organizations that focus on helping
kids overcome life’s challenges and grow up to be
their best selves.
In addition to United Way, the 2014 Youth Week
partners are Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lethbridge &
District, Boys and Girls Club of Lethbridge & District,
5th on 5th Youth Services, Family Centre, Wood’s
Homes and YWCA of Lethbridge & District.
Among the services they provide are afterschool care, employment services, food access and
emergency shelter for homeless youth.
The partners kicked off the week by launching
500 bio-degradable balloons with the help of the
students at Dr. Gerald Probe Elementary. Each
balloon contained a student’s handwritten dream for
the future.
Tuesday featured a Media Dodgeball Showdown
at the Boys and Girls Club of Lethbridge between the
Youth Week partners, city councillor Blaine Hyggen
and your favourite local radio and TV announcers
from CTV, Global, ShawTV, CJOC 94.1, B93.3, The

On Wednesday, The Incredibles, X-Men and
Batman Begins were shown consecutively at the

2014 Youth Week wrapped up with a family
friendly BBQ in Galt Gardens on Friday, featuring
food, games, fun and the chance to learn about free
programs for Lethbridge’s youth.

CASL regulations wage war on spam
What your business needs to know about new legislation
Tristan Schofield
for United Way of Lethbridge
& South Western Alberta
We’ve all been the victims of spam
emails in our lives but Canada has
a new weapon in the fight against
email spammers.
Canada’s anti-spam legislation
(CASL) comes into effect on July
1, and could mean the way your
business interacts with the public will
need to be updated to comply with
the new regulations.
The new legislation is intended to
ensure that commercial electronic
messages (CEMs) follow a set of
guidelines and procedures.
CASL is being put into place in
order to regulate CEMs that are
considered to be spam (unsolicited
or misleading messages).
Any CEMs sent out will now need
either written or implied consent
from the recipient.
What exactly is implied consent?
Well, if your business has maintained
a relationship with Joe Schmo and he
hasn’t expressed any concerns over
receiving messages from you in the
past two years, it is fair to assume
he has given consent to continue
receiving messages.
Local business owners can breathe
a sigh of relief as implied consent
exists for messages sent to anybody
that is considered a regular customer
or a vendor.
Non-profit organizations (NPOs)
can continue sending CEMs to
volunteers, donors or members of
the organization from the past two
years. Implied consent for these
individuals will be in effect until July
of 2017, unless they request for you
to stop sending them messages.
Registered charities sending
out messages with the express
6
purpose of raising funds for their
causes have been exempt from
the new legislation. However, it is
important to note that registered
charities should still make the effort
to comply with CASL as much as
possible.
So, what needs to be in a CEM in
order for it to comply with the new
regulations?
•
The body of any CEM must
contain an unsubscribe mechanism
•
The name of the sender must
be prominently included in the CEM
•
The sender’s address, and
either a telephone number, email or
web address must be present
On top of this, any CEM must have
a clear and designated purpose that
is easily understood by the recipient.
Getting used to the new
regulations may be difficult
at first. Visit fightspam.gc.ca
for more information or to get
periodic updates about any new
developments in Canada’s new
legislation. You can also visit http://
www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/casl-lcap.htm
for more.
