35th Annual Bull Sale
Monday, February 23, 2015 • 1:00 p.m. CST
Welcome to our 35th Annual Bull Sale.
We would like to take a moment to say thank you for the
continued interest in our program. We are humbled by
the commitment to our genetics shown by both long time
costumers as well as new ones. This continued support
is what drives us to produce cattle that fit industry
demands, such as carcass traits, docility, growth and
performance, fleshing ability, reproductive traits and
longevity.
This year we took our annual trip the National Western
Stock Show and participated in the infamous Pen Bull
Show in the Yards. It was our most successful trip to
date. We were honored to exhibit the Reserve National
Champion Balancer Pen of Three Bulls. During the show,
judge Doug Hixxon stated, “This is the youngest set of
bulls with the highest rate of gain. I am impressed with
the level of performance and uniformity these bulls offer
as well as their quality as individuals and their ability
to maintain a soft look.” We were also named one of
two runners up in the Breeder’s Choice Balancer Bull
Futurity, where fellow breeders select bulls they would
most like to use within their own program. These bulls
along with half siblings sell on February 23rd.
This set of bulls excels in structure, function and pounds.
We have had the best gain to date on the bulls with the
least amount of energy in the ration than ever before.
Our bulls and females offer real world fleshing ability
backed by generations of productive females that take the
“guess work” out of each calf crop. When you evaluate
this set of bulls we think that you will agree that they do
indeed fit industry demands.
Please join us February 23rd. Visitors are always
welcome.

Influential is the complete package, backed by an outstanding pedigree. He is out of
our long-time donor Hott Damn 31L, who at the age of 14 can still produce some
of the top genetics in the breed (maternal brothers sell as lots 2 & 31, grandsons
of Hott Damn sell as lots 37 & 62). Influential is sired by Secret Brand, a bull we
raised and are using in our program and who is proving himself to be a breed
changer. The combination of Hott Damn and Secret Brand is a home run and we

build a herd around. Over three-quarters of
our cows go back to these genetics, it does
not get more proven than this.

“Gelbvieh genetics bring many vital
traits to the table, including growth,
muscling, milk production, and
fertility. These traits are in high
demand, particularly to help improve
the efficiency of beef production and to
reduce the cost of beef for consumers.
Balancer cattle offer the option of
having a bull battery made up only of
Balancer bulls, allowing producers to
take advantage of retained heterosis.”

This is truly an exciting opportunity to own a female that does it all. We like to put
all the emphasis on cow families, genetics and potential as a brood cow, but this
is one that could be used in all scenarios including the show ring. She has a great
disposition and a pedigree backed with longevity and consistency.

only get better with time.

A select number of the bulls in this year’s sale sell with
genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs). Those bulls with GE
EPDs are indicated in the lot listing, right below the Adj. YW.
GE EPDs combine pedigree, individual performance and
genomic information to save time and money, reduce risk, and
accelerate the rate of genetic progress.
The information from the genomic data can be as informative
as a bull’s first calf crop or a cow’s lifetime production record. Since
the genomic data is incorporated directly into the EPDs, cattle
producers will not have to learn how to interpret the new data.
Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation
All of the AGA EPDs are backed by the industry’s largest
and most robust multi-breed international genetic evaluation in
the world. Growth and carcass EPDs for Gelbvieh and Balancer
animals are directly comparable to Simmental, Red Angus,
Shorthorn, Limousin and a growing number of other breeds.
The multi-breed EPDs combine pedigree, performance,
ultrasound, carcass and genomic data into one easy to use set of
numbers. Seedstock breeders and their commercial customers can
have confidence in the AGA’s EPDs to evaluate the genetic merit
between breeds for both purebred and hybrid seedstock.

Carcass traits
EPD Definitions
Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh
Association EPDs and the units in which they are published.
The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available
to members only.
Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score,
which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values
suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.
Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot
carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.
Ribeye area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches
between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are
preferable.
Maternal traits
Calving ease direct (CE): Percent of unassisted births of
a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number
is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be
vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves
pulled in his herd.
Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of
marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score
units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an
indicator of higher carcass quality grades.
Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to
produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.
Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of
unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher
number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD
is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts
which animals produce daughters with a genetic predisposition to calve unassisted as heifers.
Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in
terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will
stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age.
The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently
available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with
reproductive longevity.
Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a
carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness
are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield drade.
What is an Index?
Indexes are tools that allow you to select for several EPDs
at once, making selections more efficient than selecting
on one trait at a time. Indexes weigh traits based on their
importance to a producer’s bottom line by using a trait’s
economic and genetic value. Indexes are a good way to put
selection emphasis on traits that are economically relevant.
Total maternal (TM): An index that combines growth
and milk information as a prediction of the weaning
weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As
an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying
accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns
comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM
Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD.
Growth traits
Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds,
for birth weight of the calf.
Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in
pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and
a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth
from birth to weaning.
Feeder profit index (FPI): An economic selection index
designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny
will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield.
Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass
weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little
emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and
calving ease.
Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference,
in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365
days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to
yearling.
