A MESSAGE FROM RABBI DOV KAPLAN
Yom Kippur is truly a great day for the Jewish People. Millions of our brothers and sisters men and women, young and old, gather together to stand as one before God. Ten times
during the day we beat our breasts, humbly asking for forgiveness. The verses are formulated
according to the alef-bet expressing our remorse for any failing in our behaviour over the past
year. Note that we do not ask as individuals. While beating our breast we say: “for the sins
we committed” meaning a shared responsibility for every Jew. Before we begin the day, our
sages also taught that we are meant to ask each other for forgiveness. Whether saying it in
words or otherwise, the message should be: If I hurt, offended, or neglected you intentionally or casually, I now feel remorse and regret. You are my brother and sister and I
am truly sorry. Instead I should have acted with patience, tolerance, and love.
Before sunset candles are lit in honour of Yom Kippur and Shabbat. Although there is no
Shabbat table nor kiddush, take the opportunity during the meal before the fast to bless your
children and grandchildren as you would on a normal Friday evening, transmitting to them
your love and pride in them.
On behalf of the entire rabbinic team let me say that we look forward to serving this wonderful
community, sharing another year of joyous occasions and lending support. We are proud to
stand with you all to hear the shofar at the conclusion of the Fast.
Wishing the entire HGSS family – may we all be inscribed in the book of life to enjoy a shana
tova, blessed with health and happiness.
TORAH TREASURES BY RABBI MARC LEVENE
On Yom Kippur you will notice that we say the confession (viduy) 10 times; 5 times within the
service and an additional 5 times in the chazan's repetition. There is much to say about these
confessions, but specifically, what is the point of reciting the same list of sins so many times?
To state the obvious, we have no control over our past or our future. We live in the present - if
someone ate a ham sandwich two years ago, he cannot "un-eat" it. It is part of the past and
can no longer be accessed.
The only time that we have any control over whatsoever is now. When we say the confession,
we need to bring Hashem into our present moment. We need to tell Him that we can't change
things, only He can; we know who we want to be in the future, but only He can give us the
strength and the perspective to move beyond the limitations of the past.
Repeatedly ‘owning up’ to our mistakes creates the reality that they really did happen, and
this, in turn, will help us to truly feel remorse and closure. This is the goal of our viduy.
We all have moments where we realise we don’t have enough room on our storage devices,
whether a camera or phone. It then falls to us to start deleting the ones we don’t want. When
we confess, we are telling Him which of the many pictures on our mobile phone we want to
delete. The key to making it work is sincerity. If we want to keep the picture and delete it at
the same time, nothing happens. In the same vein, if you want to hold back and move forward
at the same time, you find yourself paralysed by the fear of throwing away your past, and the
fear of holding on to it. The profound beauty of God’s forgiveness is that once the photo has
been deleted it is gone forever. No longer can it be accessed, no longer can it pop up on
some backup device - it completely vanishes.
Talking to God is the most liberating thing in the world. Tell Him where you have been, what
you have done, and who you want to be. Use your own language and ask Him for the key to
finding your place in this world. Use the many times we repeat the viduy to open the
conversation, our very own conversation with God.
Please God, we should have an uplifting time this Yom Kippur. This can only be achieved
with time – time to think and to pray. Time to reflect and to ponder. Wherever you are or
whatever surroundings you find yourself in, this Yom Kippur CAN change your life!
