Message From the President
Dear Members,
At the evening lecture on 3rd March, Dr Kelly Hogan gave an excellent talk entitled "Dynamics of the Barents Sea Ice Sheets: insights from submarine landforms and clay minerals". Dr Hogan was the recipient
of a student grant to help fund her studies, so it was additionally interesting hear feedback from those
studies.
The next evening talk will be "Advanced reservoir evaluation using downhole fluid analysis and asphaltene Flory-Huggins-Zuo equation of state" by Shyam Ramaswami from Shell. Shyam is also a SPWLA Distinguished Lecturer from 2013, this is at 18:30, on Monday 7th April, at the Geological Society. The
presentation is free to attend and followed by drinks and savouries.
The next one-day seminar will be "Do you want more Pay: What is Net and Pay & the use and abuse of
cutoffs", on 17th June. We are currently calling for abstracts, so if you would like to present or you would
like to suggest someone we approach for a good talk, then please submit to Ian Draper
([email protected]) . The agenda will include case studies and presentations on the how
much “art” can go into Petrophysics and how different our approaches to interpretation can be!. Please
see the website for more details.

London Petrophysical Society - Request for Abstracts
On Tuesday 17th June the London Petrophysical Society will be holding a one-day seminar entitled Do You Want More Pay? Which will examine what is Net and Pay and the
use and abuse of cutoffs. at the Geological Society, Burlington House, London.
This is a call for abstracts for presentations from Oil & Gas Companies, Service Companies, Academia and other interested parties on aspects concerning Do You Want More
Pay?
The seminar will consist of a series of themed talks each lasting between 20 and 25
minutes, with five to ten minutes for questions.
We also hope that we will be able to give a set of the abstracts and the presentation slides
(either as presented or edited) to the participants after the event.
This seminar is intended for general technical interest (as opposed to sales or marketing)
and we request that the talks are kept technical in nature, with the use of generic rather
than trade names.
Abstracts should be up to 300 words and may include one or two illustrations and submitted in Word Document or Adobe PDF format. The deadline for abstract submission is
10 May 2014
Many thanks in anticipation,

Why: To encourage the pursuit of excellence in young professional petrophysicists. To celebrate the outstanding contribution that Dick made to our industry during
his 45 year career.
Who:
Industry professionals with up to three years industry experience; or researchers (but not MSc or PhD students as they are covered by the Iain Hillier award
scheme).
Where: UK based companies or research centres, or UK based workers on short/
medium term over-seas assignments.
What:
Annual prize consisting of a trophy and a cash award (£1000).
How to apply; How to apply; Qualifying young professionals can nominate themselves, or they can be nominated by a colleague or friend, the submission process is
the essentially the same.
Submit a conference style poster (or paper) to LPS committee for review. The topic
should be an inspiring and innovative project or piece of work based on formation
evaluation using borehole data such as logs, core, pressures and fluids. Integration
with other subsurface disciplines is encouraged, as are original contributions on theoretical and applied aspects of petrophysics, including both open-hole and cased-hole
well logging as well as core analysis. Case histories and interpretation are also of
special interest. You can submit posters or papers that have been published or are
under consideration for publication elsewhere, but please give details. The work can
have been done as part of a team and does not have to have been an individual project.
More than one submission per applicant can be made in any one year, and submissions can be made in every year that the candidate is qualified to apply. Submissions
will be kept confidential unless otherwise stated.
Selection; Based on the submitted posters (or papers), the LPS committee will decide which most warrants the award. The submission deadline is 25th April 2014.
The Committee will make their decision at the May committee meeting. Submit the
manuscript to the VP External Relations and copy to the President. Details available
on this webpage; http://www.lps.org.uk/committee.asp
