Bob: Hi. I am Bob. How are you doing?
A: I’m pretty good. How about you?
B: I’m great. Where are you from?
A: I’m from Japan.
B: Which city? (Which city are you from?)
A: (It’s) Nagaoka. It’s located in the North West of Tokyo, so it takes 2 hours by bullet train from
Tokyo. My city is famous for Sake.
B: I see. I have never been to Japan. I would like to visit.
A: You should go to Japan because you can see beautiful sceneries. I think Japan is one of the
best tourist destinations. By the way, where are you from?
B: I’m from San Francisco.
A: I see. It’s a great place.
B: Of course.
A: Okay. It’s nice talking to you, but I have to go.

Besides using verbal greetings such as “hello” or
“hi,” how do you handle non-verbal greetings such as
shaking hands, giving hugs, and kissing? These greetings
might be very uncomfortable for some Japanese people
because they don’t have the same customs as Western
people have.
