JAPANESE Newsletter April 2015 Dear Students and Families, Konnichiwa! (Hello!) In April, the weather is pleasantly mild in Japan. The cherry blossom, or sakura, is Japan's unofficial national flower and there are many dozens of different cherry tree varieties in Japan. However, the cherry blossom season is relatively short and most varieties of cherry tree only blossom for a few weeks at most in spring. From late March to early April, sakura go into full bloom all over Japan. In more than half of Japan, the cherry blossoming days come at the same time of the beginning of school and work after vacation, and so welcoming parties are often opened with hanami. Usually, people go to the parks to keep the best places to celebrate hanami with friends, family, and company coworkers many hours or even days before. Japanese school calendar starts from April 1, although Nyugakushiki (entry ceremony for schools) are usually held later, around second week of April. In April, the first two weeks, we will focus on the “Vegetables and fruits” theme. In second two weeks we will focus on the “Folk tales” theme.
